Cutting Exhaust Piping=higher pitch in sound?

I bought a JDM rear bumper which shortened the backend considerably by a few inches versus the American Evo 9 bumper. Now my Greddy Exhaust hangs out way beyond the JDM and it makes the muffler stick out (obnoxiously). I'm thinking about cutting off a few inches of the piping to make it look better. However, if I do that, will the pitch of the engine go noticeably higher? I can visualize a trombone, when the brass part (that you hold with your right hand) is extended the notes are lower, and when the brass is brought in, the pitch elevates.

I really like the low, mean sound of the engine right now, and if I cut off a few inches will it be the same or higher pitched? I figured I'd ask.

Honestly I don't think you'll even be able to tell. Its only about 4-5 inches... I just did mine a few weeks ago with a Megan exhaust. I couldn't even put the back section on because the muffler canister hits the JDM bumper... I had to grind all the hangers off, shorten the pipe, reposition the muffler and weld the hangers back on.

Wow! Really??? I'm gonna probably do this tomorrow. Was there a way for you to do it without grinding off the hangers??

Instead of doing what he did (seems like a lot of extra work) just cut of a few inches of the piping prior to the muffler and re weld it.

Absolutely not. I've heard so many times that you can just cut off ~3-4inches before the muffler of straight section and your good, let me tell you in my case that is was NOT going to work any which way.
The megan exhaust comes off at an angle, and since the canister is what is hitting the bumper, you need to move that back. Also the hangers are welded to the canister and right before it to the exhaust pipe, if you shorten the pipe, the hangers are no were near the body mounting points anymore, and keep in mind one of the hangers is in the wheel well pretty close to the upper control arm... so you most certainly have to reposition the hangers, especially if you want the exhaust to fit properly to the bumper.

Also, I didn't just cut a straight section out either, I had to but some bend in there for everything to get all back together 100% perfect fitment..... I'll post a pic when I find mine.

Yes it was a decent amount of work to get it to fit, but it fits very very well.

I took it to the exhaust shop today. They told me I only had 2 inches to work with the way my Greddy bends. I said forget it, totally not worth it when you gotta take out 5+ inches. So I'm just gonna remove the 'cone' off the exhaust tip. Easy, quick, free fix. That way, it'll sit pretty much exactly where it needs to be and not hang out. It won't be as aesthetically pleasing, but whatever. I'd rather put that money somewhere else (like a can of fix a flat and then take the spare tire out. That's like 20 lbs at least. LOL)

lol.... I get it, it certainly does depend on which exhaust you have, so anyone take my comments specific to the megan exhaust that I'm using, sure some are similar but every exhaust probably dosen't need to be modified, my buddies exhaust wasn't modded and his exhaust tip didn't stick out that far

I have the Buschur with MagnaFlow muffler on my 05 Evo and when I went to the JDM bumper I also cut off a few inches in between the tip and muffler. I welded it back on and haven't looked back since. There was no noticeable change in the exhaust tone and it doesn't look like I'm driving around with a spring board sticking off the back end! LOL

You wouldn't want a condition where the exhaust gases get caught by the bumper and trapped, so it would depend where the exhaust tip sits in relation to the bumper... if its really short I wouldn't do it.

Here are some pics of my modified exhaust. No bumps or rattles or melting of the bumper.
