Hoping for quick answer: play in axles after reinstall

Hey all, hoping for a quick response as I'm working on the car now. I'm installing mew driveshaft axles and the axles are in but there is maybe a 1/4" of play on each side at the trans. Is this normal? They don't come out when I pull on them, so I'm assuming they're in there. I've reinstall my axles multiple times so I'm not sure why I'm questioning it this time, but just want to be sure that's normal and don't want to beat on the axles too much. Thanks

I guess I didn't clarify this but this was when the axles were not connected to the hub assembly and still loose on the outer ends. When the axle nuts were on and suspension was back together there was no play. And the play I'm mentioning is in and out on the axis of the axle, not like up or down.

Just looking for clarifications from someone who does this more often that I do

Actually I checked the car today after driving 50-60 miles after the install yesterday and no issues or leaks so I'm assuming everything is normal and correct

As the front wheels travel up and down over uneven surfaces the axles have to change length. The inner joint is where this occurs. So, in and out play is normal there.

The axle end does slide in/out of the trans on the stub shaft a bit. 1/8-1/4" sounds about right.

I agree. There is small amount of in and out play when the axles are installed onto the stub shafts on the driver and passenger side.
