To search or not to search?
I assume you're speaking to me so I will answer in kind.
No that is not basically what I am saying. I specifically said that most times I do a search for something specific the search comes up with too many posts that have nothing to do with my question or there isn't any info at all. I never once said I didn't sift through any of it. But after a few minutes of scrolling through multiple posts and not finding anything I will certainly ask for someone to guide me in the right direction by either linking a pertinent thread or answering the question for me. That is not too much to ask of anyone unless that person is just a lazy-***.
And what does a lost child in the woods have to do with the internet? I'm plenty man enough to look for my own answers, but I'm also MAN ENOUGH to know when I don't have the knowledge and will ask for help.
Noob? Check out the sign on date (a full year and half prior to yours)...don't think that quite qualifies me for a noob.

it has nothing to do with the woods, or being a man, it was a metaphor. and wouldn't you think SEARCHING for the answer is precisely what you do when you don't have the knowledge? I think that's what people who want to learn something new do, they research the subject matter until they understand it. why is that concept so hard for some people to grasp? when you search through enough information to form a reasonable assumption, but require opinion and experience to guide you further, that's when you pose a question to someone with more knowledge. asking something stupid makes you look stupid, plain and simple.
the n00b comment was meant for all you ****ing whiners. I spend hours upon hours doing the research to really understand my car and the things I do to it. I spend countless hours answering questions constructively, and countless hours making useful threads for others to learn from. I don't have any idea what you do for this forum, as I am sure you had none until just now about what I have done, and have no problem at all with you. I just disagree in this instance, mainly because you are fighting a battle for people who will post once or twice about something stupid and never return. you can tell the difference between constructive n00bs and annoying n00bs almost instantly by the tone and structure of their questions. I answer only the ones that deserve a reply, and either stay completely out of the others or point and laugh. some people don't like me, but the n00bs who change tactics and read a little bit after my admonition get their questions answered the next time, and most likely no longer dislike me. either way, it weeds them out
BTW, n00bness doesn't have anything to do with your sign up date or your post count, it's a level of awareness of the interwebz. like I said, I don't know you from Jim, online or otherwise, and couldn't call you a n00b in any serious capacity for that reason alone. simmah down now...
after the question has been asked... 20 people saying search doesnt help....
you can either answer the question thus when some1 does search theres a question and answer that is very clear or you can ignore it.
when theres the question then 20 people saying search then the last person gives the answer, when i actually do go to search after the 5th post if it looks like a bs thread im gonna skip to the next and not waste my time.

I most certainly did provide some suggestions, perhaps you should read some of my other posts in this thread. I never said we should answer everyones questions without regard to past posts. I simply said that people should either leave the post alone if they don't want to take the time to answer, or at least provide a path of knowlege (i.e., FAQ, links, direct answer). I'm sorry you don't have the patience for that.

I to do a lot of research before I ask a question. In fact I spent about 4 months reading EvoM before I purchased my 03. But then again I have been a member of other vBulletin style boards and know how to navigate them without irritating too many people.
And I do probly what 90% of the members of this board do. Read what others have to say, interject when I have an opinion or point to make and maybe once in a great while post something that others may find usefull.
see, this is the point I am trying to make. the only thing you have done is prove that you are a reputable member of EvoM. you have the brains to realize you can't just pose a question without knowing about the subject matter first. you don't need to be an expert to pose intelligent questions, and if you start a thread asking which intake is best then you have little to no reason for breathing the same air that I do. car background or not it doesn't even take the intelligence of a moron to start a new thread such as that. your hear that n00bs! LOWER than a moron!!!!
I really do understand where you are coming from man, and am not trying to argue with you since we obviously share some of the same opinions anyway. it's like I said, we just have different viewpoints on this subject.while we are on the subject of n00bs dumbass questions, what do you think of a two month search period at the beginning of each persons membership to the site? you can't start a new thread, except in OT and other non-post count forums, until you reach the two month point. you can bump any old threads, but can't start one. I don't believe the software supports such an option, and IIRC it has actually been suggested before, but I think this would alleviate almost all unnecessary threads.
you will still have the abusers who will sign up and not come back for two months, but if the site doesn't disclose the waiting period until the person actually signs up it should weed out the morons who have nothing to contribute.
that's just my $.02
I hear ya and thanks for clarifying your view
I like the idea of the waiting period but as you said it may be beyond the control of the system currently in use. I also suggest that we make it mandatory for users to read the rules, point system, and FAQ (at least what's there) before posting. The only current way I can see to enforce that is have them "agree" to this (such as a EULA agreement on software) or face a posting penalty such as temporary posting suspension or otherwise.
These are all good ideas, however it all boils down to the individual and how they feel they should conduct themselves on the board.

Has there been any thoughts given to organizing FAQs in a more hierarchical manner, something like the 1000AAQ (Already Answered Questions) we had for the DSM?

Just remember, we moderate in our spare time. Not as a career.
Also, any regular member that wanted to do something like that is WELCOME to. We'll sticky it right away.
Don't I know it! I started the original 2gnt.com site back in '98, even hand-coded the html in Notepad! As the site grew, it quickly outstripped my ability to keep up with the demands. Fortunately, over the years dedicated individuals stepped up and took over the administration and moderating duties, and are doing an awesome job with it.
I'm still a newb here in Evo-land, but I'm definitely up for making whatever contributions I can.

Yeah, but it takes a lot of time and dedication. I'd love to have something like the Unibomber's FAQs on NASIOC, but I don't have the time, knowledge or expertise to do that.

Gotta love how this thread turned out. Once again, Evolvd goes out of his way to try and refute me on an issue where I'm RIGHT, and he ends up getting shot down by other people - in this case several moderators.
Are you even reading the same post I am? Obviously not...I don't see anyone shooting me down. Suggestions were asked, and I provided them. All I see you doing is complaining, complaining, complaining.
How are you right? Oh I know, you are right in thinking you know everything and that the forum should be run by YOUR rules. Sorry bud but you are not a moderator here so my opinion is worth just as much as yours.
Why don't you go tell some newbs how to build their car exactly like yours. For a guy who says he has me on ignore you sure can't seem to ignore me.
