That's why I think it is a good idea that they are offering the automatic with the padles in the X. It should cut down on warranty expense.

well for ppl like Kelly and Jim....not to sound like an ***....but they take there cars to the track a lot. and when u have 400awhp and track it multiple times (a lot) and start to get miles things break. I guess its safe to assume it comes with racing ur car. Nothing is made to last for ever, and Jim has about 60k miles? and i rember him telling me "I drive the **** outta it."

im not trying to be an *** to you guys....but i dont think its cheap parts...just alot of abuse and things break. Everything has there stress points and yall hit'em. Ther is that one guy in Frisco that has the 600hp black Evo....hes drags his car and is still on the stock drivetrain minus clutch. im sure it will eventully go out aswell...

but the question is, does he beat on it as much as jim or kelly? if not hes wasting a beautiful thing also, what color are his brakes? thats a good indicator of how much punishment your car takes (with the exception of mark berry and jim harris and other guys who autocross 10+ times a year, yet never put enough heat in the brakes to turn them brown)

^^ yep me too

My car was pretty much stock and it went to the dealership at least two times a month for warrenty repair. I had enough replacement parts on that thing to build another evo.

dont drive it? eeek....so is it safe to assume that Mitsu used ****ty parts in there cars? is this somthing that past Evolutions have had? or just the USDM Evos? cause it might be cheaper to find a TCase of a Evo7 or 6 that might not break...

maybe this is somthing that a lawyer can take care of...cause if they are breaking so easy then it might be due to Manu defect/or Lemon law?......or it could just be cheap parts and Mitsu doest care cause they dont warrenty them anyway....

the latter would be the correct answer.

I agree with you Andrew, but the problem that I have is with cases like Ramsey's. He clearly doesn't race his car, and warranty was denied.
I agree that I do drive the crap out of my car, but I don't abuse the driveline. I know that I have contributed to the early demise of the TC, but I still don't like spending $3k on a car that is 3 yrs old. We will revisit this topic when you start to have driveline issues and then you can tell us what your thouhgts are.

It seems to me that there is a lot of speculation and inference that is not warranted. Mechanical parts fail on their own for a very limited number of basic reasons. The Evo community has identified, for example, that some people have lost their 6 speed gearboxes after repeated HPDE on road courses. The cause was narrowed down primarily to the stress and heat cycles on the physically smaller gears. So the solution is to stick with the 5 speed, or cool the box, use different fluid, etc...

So...I think it would behoove us to determine precisely which TC parts are failing and why. The rest of us could us the information to implement changes that will prolong the life of our parts and prevent failures.

If we don't share this information and learn these lessons, then we take away a key point to being a community of enthusiasts in the first place. An information gathering thread is in order...

jeffs problem is the transfer case, specifically the ring and pinion. i'm certain that is jims problem too.

kellys sounded just like jeffs as well, but not quite as loud, certainly similiar sound though.

Yeah that would make sense. Since these are not warranty items, we should have no problem obtaining the parts and inspecting them. A proper inspection will likely reveal the cause of failures...

but like i said earlier....does anyone know if the EVO7 and before has had problems like this? cause the most cost effective solution for everyone is to get JDM EVO7/6 TC, unless Mitsu has a history of bad TCs....i wouldt even know what to start looking into EVO7/6 stats though....maybe someone on here knows how to find these sources....

how would you be sure that is the most cost effective solution if you have no idea what one costs, where to get one, or even if they are strong enough to take a beating?

i think the most cost effective way to do it is, buy the evo, immediately send the tranny and transfer case off to shep for a rebuild, reinstall and then pretend like it was the first day you had the car.

I never factored in a possible trasfer case rebuild when budgeting for maint. on my evo. Just basics like clutch/brakes...guess I better hold off on any more modding and start a rebuild fund just in case.
