yeah like most have said - its the police officers judgement call.
Just like window tinting.

Most cops wont give a shti unless they found out their wife is banging the mailman or something, and feel the need to please himself by hasseling the X-hundred thousands of people driving around with parts that were purchased at Crappy tire, wal mart, etc.

There was a time before where Canadian Tire even stopped selling tinted license plate covers... but now you can find them at all stores easily.

I've had a cop question my oem ralliart muffler, saying it was illegal, but never once had one take a second look at the plate covers.

Remember Those MTO drivers license place are privately run with government oversight.. so it wouldnt surprise me if there was something illegal about it. Just keep a recipt in the car incase that another cop comes back with the same excuse.

I have a smoked cover on my rear license plate and it's not as dark as the one from Canadian Tire. I've had the police behind me several times too without any problems yet.

It was about $6-7 at Zellers, for those of you that want to keep a cover on.

I got pulled over once because they "thought I didn't have a front plate." Then they saw that I had a grey cover, and told me that only clear ones were legal.
I asked if I could just get off with a warning and ill replace the cover with a clear one, and they said "ok."

I replaced it with a clear one, and I got pulled over again only 5 days after! For the same reason! They couldn't see my plate! But I pointed to it, and they let me go...

I believe its illegal to have anything over your plate, clear or not. I know some dealers install the clear ones so that's why the police dont mind them but there have been people stopped in the past for them.

If you got pulled over because they didn't see your plate, that's one thing.
It's honestly probably just the officer feeling a little embarrassed at not noticing and trying to nitpick something else that could potential be "illegal" to save face.

I got pulled over because a cop thought I didn't have a front plate, where as it is side-mounted. After a little discussion about how the dealership put it there, he let me go.
My roommate on the other hand, got pulled over for the same reason (he drives an Evo X). First the cop said he had no plate. Then the cop said it's illegal to have it side-mounted. Then the cop said it was hard to read (winter time mind you, car hadn't been washed in a while). In the end the cop let my roommate go telling him he should wash his car.

So long as you aren't doing anything seriously offensive, you shouldn't have an issue with a protective cover over your plate. In my opinion, all cars should have them (or at least clear ones) as it protects your plate from those horrible rust spots from the screws and standard wear/tear from daily driving.

Easy budz, leave the military out of this... or I'll have to come over and rape you. lol jk.

I've never had issues and I have a tinted on the rear and blue on the front.
