Brining an Evo 8/9 to Canada.... what would I need?
Hi everyone,
so i am doing this for a friend whos debating on buying an evo 8/9 in NS, but not sure what the legalities behind it are and what would need to be done to fully have it regstered. If u guys can lead me to some info that would be highly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

its like importing any other vehicle from the us into canada. Check riv.ca for list of documents and paperwork needed.
pretty sure they even tell you step by step what you need to do.

this is not everything, but will give you a good idea.
- you will need a clearance of recall letter (i assume from mitsubishi) and you will need to send this to the border IN ADVANCE.
- you need the bill of sale, ownership (title i believe its called in the US) and perhaps some other minor paperwork when you cross the border with the car
- when crossing the border, you will be paying (i think) 5.1% duty, and also 5% G.S.T. for the vehicle, based on the selling price.
- i believe your car sits in the border for 24 hours or 48 hours before it is released into canadian soil
- once you bring it into canada you need to get it "canadianized", which means if the speedo doesnt read KM/H you need to get a cluster (most cars have KM/H on it already), get DRLs if they are not on the car, and do safety / emissions as you would on buying any used car.
- then just take it to the MTO and register it under your name as you would with any car
- ENJOY THE ****ING EVO!

your car can sail through customs at the boarder provided all of your documents and paperwork are there 72 hours in advance I think. Specifics will be on riv.ca
I'd hate to leave an evo sitting like that.. I'd sleep in it if I had to.. although I'm not sure if I remember evo ken saying he had to leave his or something.... I could be wrong.
As long as you fax your stuff to the border 72hrs before your good and can just drive right over after you pay your duties and they stamp your ownership. Just make sure you call the border ahead of time to make sure they have received you stuff or else you will probably have to wait.
Recall letter is $300 from Mistu. you have to call their head office once you the ownership and stuff signed over and they will fax the recall letter over to you.

You need to satisfy the need to have all recalls performed before the car can be imported but just roll into a US Mitsu dealership and ask them to do run the VIN. I did this in Niagara Falls, NY at no cost and saved myself $300 it looks like.
Having said this, I don't know if they did me a favour by not charging me but that's not likely.
The 72 hour lead time is critical. If you show up at the 69 hour mark, you'll be waiting 3 hours at the border.
As an example, seeing as you're in London and spend time in Detroit, one might assume that the Windsor border crossing will accept imported cars but AFAIK only the Queenston-Lewiston crossing allows cars to be both exported from the US and imported into Canada. Your friend would be best advised to research this to prevent any surprises which could cost him to spend an additional and this time, unplanned, 72 hours in the states.
Import duties are 6.1%
recall letter from mitsu isnt the only way. i got something else from mitsu i cant remember what exactly it was called but it cost $45 +tax and was approved by the RIV. The girl at RIV actually recommended it.
72 hrs, title in hand, bill of sale, some sort of recall notice, the vehicle, and your money is what you need. oh ya and if you are driving it, proof of insurance, and a NY state in-transit permit ($30)
good luck!
