Sleeving an Evo 8-9 block
Does anyone have any experience with sleeving an Evo 8-9 block? I know that its not common, but if anyone has any input on this that would be great. Also, at what point would you suggest sleeving the block? Thanks for any help
With all the opinions there are a few facts on sleeving the block-
Not guaranteed to prevent failure
Realistically we havent seen a failure of the block without a really good reason and then its been over 1000whp when it happens. AEM F-ups at 10k can cause misfires, momentary pre ignition and will crack the block on the backside closest to the water passages. I have seen most failures on #2 near the 10 o'clock or 11 position. I will take some pictures here in a second.
There is no set power level but as the power goes up blips can cause the issue to be very apparent. Most of the blocks above that level have been filled solid and are track only. I assume that you can run it at any power level realistically its just when stuff hits the fan it hits it quick. Typically these issues will cause headgasket problems before the block breaks though.

I thought about sleeving my 4G64 block so that I could have a smaller bore size and better head gasket surface area around the cylinders. Never did it though. Beyond that, I don't know why you wouyld want to do that, the blocks have proven to be pretty good.

I wouldn't want a smaller bore per se, but I considered it because the 4G64's are known for having HG issues, and the smaller bore should alleviate that. I ended up just going with a Power Enterprises HG though and sticking with an 87mm bore.
I've sleeved a 7 bolt DSM 4g63 block that had scoring damage from a piston loss and it's held up fine. You just need to make sure you have a shop that knows how to do it correctly and pays attention to tolerances. This is not a performance mod -- it was done to salvage a block that had a lot of machine work in it already. However, since Evo blocks are not $100 each, like DSMs, it might be worth a look if you have an otherwise usable Evo block, or can't find a replacement for a reasonable price.
