Cool CBRD <3 [post 2 of 3]

on the RRE blog
http://roadraceengineering.com/blog/?p=4169#more-4169
I talk about how I blew my motor.
I also posted a review of RRE in the buyer's corner here.

It was sad times but I was not ready to just throw my EVO in a gutter and go buy another.

Instead, I decided to keep building off the CT9A chassis and specifically my 2003 VIII because I like how raw it is (no ACD, no AYC, none of that kind of stuff...)

When RRE pulled my motor, I took a look at my JDM IX MR 20G turbo with a Forge WGA. It looked solid. However, I had just blown my motor, so no one could fully tell what was wrong with, it if anything was wrong with it at all, without taking it apart. The turbo came from Scot Gray's EVO VIII MR and I don't remember how many miles he put on it. I put around 20k on it though. After thinking about it and researching a bunch on this website called GOOGLE, I decided to send my turbo to CBRD.

I emailed CBRD and got a quick response from Chad Block himself. He seemed like a really cool guy over email right away and we discussed rebuilding my turbo for my RRE 2.3 motor in depth over a couple emails and a really good phone conversation.

The next day I sent the turbo to CBRD. It took a few days to get there but once it was there, Chad gave me a diagnosis on the turbo and some possible routes to take on rebuilding it. I decided to go with a BBK Full ported with their WGA. CBRD did the work quickly and shipped the turbo back. It took a few more days for the turbo to get back.

When I got the turbo back, the first thing I noticed is that it looked brand new. I wondered if it was even the same turbo. Once my engine was ready, the set up was installed on the car without issue. During break in, on a baby base tune, I could already notice that the turbo was spooling at 1k or so lower than to JDM IX MR 20g was spooling. Then, after Scot tuned the car on 91 and E85, the difference was obvious. The BBK Full spools WAY sooner than stock and still sooner than the JDM IX MR 20g. Also, the compressor surge at lower speeds in traffic that bothered me with both my stock 16G with a 10.5 hotside and the JDM 20g was gone. This turbo is WAY smoother and much more powerful.

CBRD's service is top notch. Chad Block is a very chill guy. After talking to him on the phone a couple times, I feel like I would actually hang out with him. If you are thinking about a turbo upgrade, look in to CBRD. Their service is amazing and they can do anything from rebuilding an OEM turbo to spec all the way to ball bearing conversions and etc.

Thank you for reading!!
