why isn't my car making the power it should be?

I had my stage 1+ tuned by Shiv a while ago, and it made around 268 hp and 244 tq.

I had a hi-flo cat at the time, and it was running an HKS Hi-power exhuast (with the 2.6" flange modified to 3"), a carsound hi-flo cat, and an ultimate racing downpipe.

I didn't realize how little power my car was making until i compared it with some other people's dyno charts on Vishnu's dyno.

Smog's made, on 91 octane, about 278 hp and about 255-260 tq it looks like. I know he's running catless, so i guess that might account for the difference.

https://www.evolutionm.net/registry/viewdyno.php?did=12

But then i take a look at ez76's chart

https://www.evolutionm.net/registry/viewdyno.php?did=5

Somehow, his is making like 280 tq on 91 octane. I know there is car to car variance, but 40 ft-lbs of torque??

And i hear from Dustin that some stage 1's are making 250+ hp.

Any guesses as to why my car sucks so bad? I got a compression test done at Road Race, and they said it was 180 in all 4 cylinders.

Also, i got it dynoed at Harman Motive's dynojet, and it only dynoed at 292hp/273 tq.

I need to get my car retuned for the 10.5 hotside, but i can't seem to figure out what the hell is wrong with my car, and its getting a bit frustrating.

Where is that extra 40 lbs of torque at?

i originally brought the car in with bad plugs and a leaky BOV, but we put the stock on back on, and Shiv changed the plugs to better ones. would this matter at all?

also, the AFR is SUPER rich, well below 11:1 after 3000rpms

20 whp is not a big range. This could be attributed to a +/-10whp variation due to engine spec tolerances in the assembly process.

In Houston there where at one time 6 APR stage 3 1.8t, We all had tha same or equivalent mods. The low of the range was at 245whp the high end was 267whp.
This range still seems to hold as more and more kits are out there.

One thing you may look at can be your wastegate spring. If its weak it will not hold the flapper closed under high boost conditions and will rob you of power.

Ran any 1/4 mile runs yet?

Check your MPH and see if your really putting those hp. You prob. dynoed on a bad weather day.

That trq. # is a little on the low side with those mods

Test pipes are a minimal guarenteed 10/10 Also Evans chart really looks like a 100 oct chart I see it says 91 but I cant remember the last time Evan ran 91 (Never since Ive been here) Also Evans car is different from everyone elses (even mine) the only car thats been dynod more than that one is the red car and only the published (scanned) plots are labled right. As for your car I think its fine mine puts out 273/258 with a basemap and like two tweeks by shiv- catless on 76 .

Also you mods are different from usual staged offerings while not detrimental other exhausts (Especially those that neck down) wouldnt be used in our sample pool for the mean HP/TQ for a given "stage"

I would also go to the drag strip and see what your running. Your MPH will let you know where you're at compared to other EVO's with similiar mods. I've never really been a fan of having the Dyno tell me where I should be, besides the drag strip is way more fun.

I was 275hp 252torque on 91 with a test pipe. That is only about a 7-8 difference. Also, Shiv Veeeeshnu put in that little black bleeder valve in my boost selonoid line. Alex, did you get that little do-hicky? It seems to allow for a bit more boost on our maxed out turbo.

91 octane. Yuck. Some station should start selling 93/94 and market it as low budget unleaded race gas.

Alex,

Shiv baseline dyno'd my car stock at 211 on pure 91 octane from Unocal 76. The strongest car he ever had was 215 on a 3rd gear pull. The average bone stock car makes about 200 hp stock. I broke the car in hard - not recommended, and on Mobil 1, also not recommended for maximum hp.

The point I'm making is you could have had a bad batch of 91 or 91 from another vendor.

If you are curious, fill up a few tanks with Unocal and re-test. Mine was a 5.5% difference which I attribute to the gas and would put your #'s where you'd want them.

In other words, your weak sauce might just need to be rendered a little.

Mine dynoed similar to yours with the hi flow cat. I am not complaining because I have tested my car at the track (1320) and it did just fine.Yeah Smoggies car is a lil stronger than mine but in the near future I predict that I flip the script.FWIW Smoggie beat me by a tenth in our only heads up race with his car stripped down 100 pound less than mine. However, I believe I still have the better 1320ft time 12.248 to his 12.291 but his car has trapped 113 mph several times and I usually trap 110-112mph. OUT!
