Question 10.5 Hotside

Would the 10.5 Hotside be beneficial to a Stage 1 without Cams? I am mainly interested in the low-end torque that was mentioned in other posts. Also I was wondering how much it would cost to do the labor, and how much Vishnu can order these for?

I called VISHNU and talked to Dave and it is possible. They have not tested on a stage 1 on the dyno. I am planning to drive up there for the day and get custom tune for the 10.5 with my stage 1. Lowend torque will be improved. Do you have a stage 1? You should come to monthly meets in SD in Mission Valley

u guys should get the cams. the diference is awesome. and they r not that expensive. plus the idle sound is incredible, i get tons of coments about it. with the stage 1 plus and hotside ur car will be a true rocket.. and its posible to touch high 11's on race gas.

In Cali we have strict smog test here. When I moved from GA I had to take a smog test with my stage 1 and passed but with cams I would most likely have to remove the cams to pass smog

I have friend in Tokyo that is coming to LA in December. I am seeing if he can get one cheaper than $245 at forced performance. Otherwise in January I will buy one than drive to VISHNU for my custom tune.

Not if you adjusted your cam gears to remove some of the overlap before you went for your smog test.

Is this true? What about the really strict Cali Smog laws? I'd love to see someone test this! I thought the problem was the duration of the cams and I'm not sure that adjusting cam gears would reduce the overlap enough to pass smog... I'd love if that were the case though! Someone should test it out!

I've heard some rumors, and Shiv actually mentioned it in one post that "it most likely will not pass smog"... so I don't really want to take my chances with the cams (I was so close to buying a set)... but I am interested in the low end power the 10.5 hotside will add... sounds like a good mod... (also undetectable by smog check stations)

Hey Snoop, yeah I actually goto UCSD, I've had my EVO ever since April of last year but I never modded it until now. My stage 1 is in progress, just got XEDE and Exhaust, and I wanna get the cam gears installed on my next trip home (bay area). I was thinking the hotside would be a good thing to do together and get a tune from Vishnu.

I live next to UCSD.....I got a black Evo, driving an MR soon. Does the MR have the 10.5 hot side ?

MR is stated to have a 10.5 already.

I don't know what you've heard, but the fact is that it is the long overlap that will compromise your ability to pass a smog test. The long overlap will create a situation whereby there is unburned fuel being passed into the exhaust at lower engine speeds. This upsets the fuel mixture and causes the bumpy idle. A smog test will interpret this as an engine running out of tune, and the exhaust gas will be dirty.

If you temporarily adjust your cams to remove the long overlap (e.g. advancing the exhaust and retarding the intake), the car will idle like a stocker and the exhaust gas should pass emissions. When you get back, simply readjust your cam settings and you're done until next year.

All the 05 Evos do. In fact, the new housing looks to be better designed than the older 10.5.
