Stage 1+ 283 HP, need help figuring out what is wrong

Hello again,

I don't know if you recall but I've been having issues with my car not pulling as it should for over 3 months. I paid 2 shops to check it out to see what was wrong. We dyno tuned because it was rich and gained very little over the base map. The original issue was the first shop messed up my cam install, put it 2 teeth off and sunk the dowel pin on the exhaust cam. They had to elongate the hole in the cam and put jb weld in it. The dowel pin is now longer, crooked and the cam gear bolt is pushing on it. Many people think this is the issue and is cuasing the cam to be timed incorrectly and giving the car too much or not enough overlapp. Today, I set the exhaust cam at -8,-6,-3 and 0 and the car felt mostly the same. From setting to setting, there might ba a bit of a difference but it is really hard to decide which one is best. This leads me to believe it is not the problem as I have been told my car should pull 315 on that dyno and I am sure I could feel a 32 AWHP difference. I checked that the timing is correct, we did a compression check and everything seemed to be close to 186 or so. We checked for boost leaks, for vacuum leaks, checked the exhaust, the cat. At the dyno we tried messing with both cam gears at the same time and set it at -9,-3 and 0 and again the curve looked exactly the same. There was only a torque vs HP trade off of 6-8. Everyone is saying timing these things makes a big difference, but my car is not reacting to any of this. Not even to a proffessional tuner and 2 shops with experience. Any suggestions? Could they have messed up the crank sensor? Would that affect anything. Could they have installed the exhaust cam where the intake cam goes? (the guy was a DSM guy so maybe out of habit slapped the cams in the wrong place? I would not think this is possible, but really dont know what to think. Thanks for reading and trying to help me. There are not codes thrown, no check engine lights.

Help

Come on, 72 people read this and no one can help? Last night I was thinking and figured I went the wrong way. As the exhaust cam/gear was botched, the gear could only have moved clockwise on the cam shaft. That would mean it got retarded, not advanced. I will try today to advance it some more to see if I get more power. Shiv told me to check the BOV to make sure it is working. Is there anyone in Houston with a stage 1+ on their car that could take my car for a ride and vise versa so I can tell how off I am? Loet me know. Thanks,

Sigfrid

Hi ruzs
There is no possible way your cams are in the wrong sides.....
There is a possibility that there are 2 exhaust cams in there, but if you supplied the shop with the cams and checked you had an intake and exhaust then that possibility would be very remote
Do you have any dyno graphs of the runs you are making?
if so I would like to see boost pressure and air fuel..
What dyno did you use?
Do you have a boost gauge in your car?
Who installed the Xede?

I don't know to which type of dyno you are referring, but where a DD dyno is concerned, you shouldn't expect to generate 315whp on a Stg 1+ car without a test pipe and at least 100oct fuel.

283whp is squarely in the ballpark for a Stg 1+ car. That works out to ~328whp on a Dynojet.

Dyno

This is on a dynojet. Vishnu tuned a bunch of cars on it and the least they had was 315 and I'm at 283.
The car felt almost the same with full exhaust and Xede. Whne we installed the cams and cam gears is when the problems started.
I cannot get the graphs of my pulls but Air fuel on the wide band was around 11.5 and I spike around 22 and taper to 18.5-19 by 7200 RPM.

If you ever feel like a drive to GA we can look at your car and see what it is actually doing...
Those #'s do seem very weak on a dynojet...
Why can't you get any graphs, surely you can call the shop, I am sure they are saved to the hard drive on the dyno

update

Jorge, an evom member called me and we met up at lunch. He has a stage1+ as well and we figured it would be a good way to compare. I could BARELY feel the difference in our cars. His was a bit smoother and a bit stronger on top, but nothing major. I will call the shop today and try to post the dyno sheets on monday or tuesday. Thanks for all the help. I might take a trip to Georgia to get it done some time soon Andrew.

10% off for Evom customers. So only $4500 an hour.

Sounds like a deal to me ! I agree... make a drive up to Dyno4mance and let them check out your car and get things sorted.
