Shiv, Andrew....Flywheel/Clutch talk

We are getting ready to put an ACT MB7-HDSS in an evo that rarely see's hard driving, is still on the stock clutch at 37k miles and almost 300whp on a DynoDynamics dyno. Only spirited driving, but mainly highway miles. Ive heard many different opinions on resurfacing the stock flywheel. Some say if there are no heat spots, not pitted, cracked or visibly damaged that I am probably fine with not resurfacing. Others say yes always resurface when getting a new clutch in. The problem is, this car will be doing on a weekend, and most machine shops are not open on the weekend and this car will have to be back up and running that same weekend because it is a daily driver to and from work. So if no resurfacing is possible, the thought of a Fidanza flywheel comes to mind. Opinions on all of this? New flywheel bad? Some say yes, some say no.......

You won't know till you pull yours out, man. Mine was flawless and looked almost new at 27k, but I've only been drag racing with this car once ever (in 2003), and it had three launches then and none since.

Personally, I always resurface a flywheel whether it looks like it needs it or not. At the very least this provides a ideal mating surface for the new clutch disk to bed-in to.

Edit: ^^^ Thats funny...it's good to see we disagree

It seems a bit extreme to buy a Fidanza just because there are no machine shops open on the weekend???
You could try and purchase a good stock flywheel from a member that has switched to an exedy unit...
Not all flywheels need resurfacing I have got by in the past just hitting it with some abrasive paper
I hope this helps

Yeh, and thats whats sooo confusing. Some say i will probably be fine, that i just need to inspect the flywheel since I have no slipping etc. Maybe take a straightedge to check it for warping and just look at it upclose and I should be fine, others say it's a sin to not resurface the flywheel. Having a daily driver and only the weekend to do the work makes things kinda hard.

I'll sell you a stock flywheel for 20 bucks plus shipping if you want to be on the safe side.

Well, it's got plenty of heat spots, but it's not cracked or warped to my knowledge. I'll check it out tonight, and if you decide you want it I can ship it out Monday.

guess im not the only 1 doin a clutch install this weekend... I also am seriously debating a new flywheel, I read in TURBO that the flywheel is part of the reason the disc get worn out so soon, it supposedly doesn't disapate heat very well. Id rather be safe than sorry, Ive launced my evo 1 time since i had it and did 2 1/8th mile runs and the stock lasted till 25K but i still don't have the $$$ to replace a clutch that often... id rather be safe than sorry. Also, plz help me out... im torn between the exedy single plate combo or the ACT street with fidanza flywheel, there is like a 200$ diff between the 2 so im just wondering which would be better... im leaning towards the ACT let me know what u think!

If you're going to do a single plate clutch, get the ACT. you won't be disappointed.

I am gonna do mine this weekend...but i think im just gonna do a home install just so I can learn in the process. I opted for the ACT Street setup. It actually uses a modified Exedy disk. I decided to stick with the stock flywheel just for the low end torque and extra inertia of the few pounds extra of the stock flywheel.
