creader question

OKay I had the Smart w/ my XEDE and I finally got the creader in. A few questions on the install. I haven't had a code thrown yet, but I guess it's a good diagnostic tool to have anyway. Well, whenm installing it, is it to be installed at all times? or just when a code is thrown? Right now, with the car off, I get the LAUNCH, 1,2,3, then it hesitates for a bit then 4,5 then I get the letter "E", then it starts the cycle all over again. IS it supposed to do this all the time? It just keeps goin...unless I am only supposed to be installing this when I recieve an ECU code...

Thanks

If it does that all the time it is FUBAR. You should send it back and get a new one.

Sounds like you have a defective Creader. We had a batch of bad CReaders, unfortunately we found out after we sent them out. If you mail us your defective CReader, we'll replace it.

I plugged mine in the car this am. it says launch, then has a bar like this "_" on each one of the led sections, then goes to an "e" in the far left corner. I haven't thrown a code yet, just testing to see if it works. does this mean that mine is dead as well?

ok a working C-Reader should look like this.

LAUNCH -1- -2- -3- pause -4 - -5- pause E then cycles though again.

On the 05's it will constantly be on, the 03-04's i think the CReader turns off when the car is off.

aresix6: sorry i read yours kinda fast, your CReader sounds like its working just fine.
A bad CReader will do otherwise.

No, that is a NONWORKING creader. the E means "No Communication"

A WORKING CReader will do the following (strait from the manual): Display [LAUNCH], followed by the trouble codes (if any). If there are no trouble codes, [- - - -] will be displayed.

That is how my CReader reads and it was still able to read codes. So I assume it works. I will talk to Dutin in the morning.

This is such a painful thread to read I just have to comment....

If the car (ECU) is OFF the Creader will exhibit "LAUNCH -1- -2- -3- pause -4 - -5- pause E" and then cycle though again. This is because the Creader cannot communicate with the ECU when it isn't powered on and normal behavior.

If the car is ON you will get something similar but NO "E". Clearly in this case the Creader is communicating with the ECU.

On the other hand if the Creader comes up with an "E" and the car is running then you need a replacement Creader.

With respect to 03-04 versus 05 cars I can only comment on the 03 car. The Creader will be powered at ALL times given that the OBD-II socket is powered directly from the battery. For reference refer to the shop manual's schematics.

There has been so much confusion on how the Creader should work maybe Vishnu needs to update their document.
