I dont want you to do that though TDC on the proper cycle goes bye bye forever it is easy to just realign it near the "0" mark (were you set TDC) and mark the belt with tape then you can put the gears to the proper position. Trust me a mistake here is a minimum or 2.5K and a lot of downtime worst case is a new longblock

Are the cam gears $280 a set?

How difficult are they to install? I've heard horror stories about untightened cam gears loosening and causing engine blow outs.

not quite sure on current price. the horror stories are from HKS gears b/c they only have 3 bolts holding them in place where the unorthodox and aem have 4 and the ones sold by vishnu have 5. hope this helps.

They're not too bad, providing you have the tool to relax the tensioner's tension on the belt. I can't see the Vishnu gears ever loosening, as they're held pretty fast with blue LocTite straight from Vishnu IIRC. It only takes about a minute to pull the upper cover and check them every once in awhile if it really worries you. They are $280 a set and worth every penny, as they phase shift your torque band up several hundred rpm. The benefit in this, of course, is exponentially increased HP, as HP is a function of Tq and rpm.
