utec or xede
Go with what your local tuner is using. If your in a situation like me and have nobody remotely close that has ever seen the engine compartment of a EVO then the XEDE is a better deal because the maps on the web are really good. Of course you have to stay close to the same mods as the maps. If you know how to tune cars using EMS I think at this point in time the UTEC is a little more user friendly with the wideband option and knock function.

I have a question. I'm just curious as to why all the subaru boards tend to think that the UTEC is more powerful than the Xede? Are we going to be given direct control over the injectors in the future like the evo utec boys will have soon?

I've routinely found that I can make more power, more safely with the XEDE or ECU reflash than any stand-alone (or semi-stand alone like the UTEC). This is because I don't have to detune from the knock threshold 2-3 degrees to account for changes in atmos. conditions/temps/etc,. With the car tuned right to the knock threshold, I can sit back and let the factory ECU apply the realtime fuel and ignition trims (which are based upon intake temp, coolant temp, knock sensor feedback, etc,.) This is far more sophisticated and reliable than any aftermarket ignition computer. A lot of people mistake the output variance for a bad thing and tout the supremecy of a stand-alone like ignition map. This isn't true. And people are finally beginning to come around to this.

Although I'm a UTEC user, I tend to agree with Shiv's opinion on this topic.. These two devices are very similar, but since I only have the UTEC, it would be unfair for me to make any real comparisons. However, I do prefer to run the Utec over a standalone for the same reasons given. The only problem is its unlikely you'd get a truly unbiased opinion no matter who you ask. your best bet is to observe what is being done with them, see what features they offer, and the expertise that is available to you (in your area, or in general) and make your decision based on your needs and the features that appeal to you most.
