Will cam gears pass smog?
Cam timing is not the same as ignition timing, which is what will be looked during a smog inspection. Adjusting the cam timing does not inadvertently adjust ignition timing, nor does it automatically fail it. With smog checks using OBDII this simplifies what the tech needs to do. All of the data goes directly to the DMV. About the only thing the tech has to do is a visual.

If you bought an OE replacement thats fine whether its from Mitsu. itself or someone else, but if on the other hand you were to buy an aftermarket "off-road" use only cam gears with/without different setting on the timing THEN you would fail smog, functional/visual. I'm not sure about other states laws on this, so i can only confirm this for Cali. ppl.
How much is smog test in CALI?
When will 2003 EVO's have to take the test?
Thanks,
Snoop
I highly doubt every CA test center employee whips out his handy 10mm socket to pull the four bolts out of your timing belt cover to look at your cam gears. If this is true, California blows goats.

Hell, on some cars you would have to remove the water pump, powere steering.......etc.
What a crock.
