87, 89, or 92/93
OoO interesting... i am curious about this one too.
instead of saying search can someone answer this for us? more than one person is interested.
search is the tough guy who doesnt know the answer but feels cool to say search, that's search's friend. we are not friends with search.

Why would you buy an Evo and want to run anything less than 91, or 93? if you run anything less than that, you will have to sacrifice the performance of your car. The less octane you run, the less boost you will have. I'm sure you could run around on crappy 87 octane all day long, as long as you never let the turbo spool up. If thats the case, then you should have just bought a regular lancer. Bottom line is.........if you wanted to buy cheap gas, then you should have bought a cheap/slow car.
I am currently running 89 octane. I have a Dynoflash base flash for 91 octane (so I can go anywhere in the country and still get gas). I have run the boost up to 25 pounds (WhiteRabbit) before I start to get knock counts (monitoring with UTEC/Tuner). It will pull 23 psi with no problem although I know I could get more advance for more power with 93 or 94 octane but it is still enough to spin the tires some if I do a quick lane change as it spools.
btw- this is without alky on.

It took him nearly $8000 in mods alone before his engine failure, he ran 12.4@111 in Tucson which is actually the second best ever time for any Evo that ever ran in Tucson.
He had a complex expensive and sophisticated aquamist system valued at over $2000 (including fancy flow gauges).
Abner (Slowcar) set a goal to reach the maximum power using 87oct, he knew the car was on its limits and he accepted the responsabilities.
I would never recommend running a Evo on 87oct unless you are running very low boost and honestly running a Evo on low boost is not a Evo at all.
I can give you many many more details about the 87oct on his 03 Evo 8 but I think 90% of this forum already know the entire history.

All I had on the car when the car went 12.4secs@111mph@3100ft was :
-hallman mbc@23psi
-gsc272i/264e
-aps cai
-ghetto tbe
-and water 10% methanol with the Aquamist 2D + DDS3
and 2 ecutek tunes
The Aquamist system is a great system! Remember, you get what you pay for. I did not have to worry to check the injection system, if something goes wrong, the car will not build boost
Will put another one on my evo9 when i get time.
The aquamist system was not 2K, it was maybe 700ish, got it from Steven@IAperformance.....there was a lot of unnecessary stuff i did like going to full swagelok fittings, pfa tubing, laser cutting for the axial mounts, incabin pressure gauge, i just like gadgets

They are definitley not that expensive! People also don't realize that Aquamist has been doing water injection systems since the early 80's, how many of the water/alcohol manufacturers can say that they've been around that long? Anyway, keep me posted on your progress with your new IX.
knock knock knock...all day long. you dont need to search to know that (especially boosted cars) need higher octane. Especially if youre tuned for an octane and are on that map...you run less, you will eventually [run] less. catch my drift?
Theoretically, I think you can run 87 octane with a meth injection system. You don't "need" 91/93 until high levels of boost, unlike a high compression NA engine. When the car is under vacuum or low to mid boost levels, it won't knock with 87. Upper boost levels will require detonation control, which meth injection can do.
Just run more meth with 87 and spray earlier.
