50/50 mix still flammable

So tonight I was talking to a bunch of friends, I know its hard to believe people like me, and they asked if 50/50 H2O and Meth was flammable. So when I got home I did a little science experiment in my drive way. I mixed 1 cup of Meth with 1 cup of distilled water and poured it on the concrete and lit it with a lighter. Yes it did ignite and burned pretty good. The mixture burned for about 30 secs. Next i tried straight meth and that was a bad idea. That stuff lit up quick and burns way hot. So the old rumor of 50/50 being safe because it is non flammable has been busted.

Tommorrow I will try 75H2O/25Meth and see what it does.

PS Please do not try this at home I am an untrained professional and had a fire extinguisher on hand. I will not be held responsible for any damage that may come from this little experimant.

Well I am not going to test that one. What I am showing is if you pop a leak under the hood you still have a pretty serious problem.

I did test the 75H2O/25meth and it does not light on the ground. I will be staying with the 50/50 mix myself.

the temperature of the tank/mass of injectant has a big role in its flammability. Its a distillation process - higher temp, methanol vapour pressure increases, more flammable.

keep it cool

My tank is mounted in my trunk. Still if the 50/50 mix sprayed all over the hot engine bay I bet it would ignite

when you are boosting/spraying, car moves at fast speed - there will be a lot of air flushing out the engine compartment

i did the same experiment a few weeks ago as my tank was leaking and i wasn't sure it was from the meth tank so i decided to light it on fire to see if the meth straight from my tank that had sprayed out would ignight and it did not. I think because when you mix the meth right away and then go to light it that's why it caught fire but if you mix meth and let it sit in for a minute then try to light it it will not burn. So i'm going to have to call BS on this myth bust!

meth/water mixtures is quite warm when initially mixed

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...4&postcount=37

that might be a possible cause for his mixture igniting more readily

What did you use to measure the cup? Who knows, maybe the concrete you poured it on also dehydrated the mixture. At the bottom of 1 gallon containers of anhydrous alcohols are chunks of activated limestone to absorb any water that gets in when the lid is removed, perhaps same mechanism?

Methanol has a melting point of -98C and boiling point of 70C. Once you spread water and methanol onto a large surface area the methanol will evaporate quicker than water. When you set fire to it, the vapour on the surface will set alight, heating the mixture below, promoting more vapour, so it goes on. Until only water is left.

This will not happen on a small surface area.

I have conducted testing with normal wiper fluid and also found it to be flamable - no big deal

BTW - last week we had a alcohol system equiped car with a line too close to the turbo - on a Subaru - the heat caused the line to rupture. The 100% methanol sprayed all over the glowing red hot turbo on the dyno - nothing happend.

(PS - it is best to route those hoses far from hot exhuast parts )

Thats good to know. I can't wait till next summer when I'll be popping my head ou the window every 30 mins to make sure my car hasn't burned to the ground.

We've sprayed Boost Juice (50/50 water/methanol) through our system onto an open flame. It put the flame out instantly.
