Tuning Question
Tuning Question
I have a question I would like to post for the local tuning shops here to answer. I have a 2005 Evo and I was stupid and bought a K&N Typhoon intkake and installed it. Since I have done that, my car is about 1 full second slower in the 1/4 and I am going to do 1 of 2 things. Either pull the intake and run the stock box again, or have it tuned if it will really make that much of a difference. My question is, can they fix the running rich thing through a mail in tune, or do I need to pay BIG $$$ to have it custom tuned at a shop? I don't plan on upping the boost until after my warranty is up, and right at this time all I have is a cat-back and the stupid intake on my car. I have a DP sitting in my garage ready to go too. Help me with making the right decision.
Well I am not a tuner but from what I have been reading the stock intake is good for up to 400hp. There are a few shops that can tune locally and I think all of them are ECUtek dealers. I personally don't care for a mail in flash since there are no two cars that are the same. If you aren't wanting to drop $650+ for ECUtek, Mynes is writing their own software for the 8's and are currently working on the software for the 9.
Both of housedj's 8's are using the software that Mynes wrote that will rival the mail in flash and you will not be down for a few days without a car.
No matter where you go to get tuned locally, the biggest benefit is that it's done on a dyno where they can tune for proper AFR and boost. Your comment "I don't plan on upping the boost until after my warranty is up..." is that for a safety factor? They say once flashed your warranty is void. Sorry if my reply didn't help since I know you are looking for one of the loal tuners to write what they think is best.

Get tuned! from talking to jay it sounds like his software is pretty good. Prolly better than having to wait for AL to come here twice a year!!
On a side note I made 272 with a mail in......Id say with a custome tune you can get a nother 10-15 more.
Jay also claims pretty soon his software will be availible to the customer to tune there own cars, providing you know what youre doing!
hth
FASTEVO8, it wouldn't hurt to get it tuned or at least put it on the dyno to see what the AFR is like
And based on the results of the dyno run, we can decide whether to yank it off or leave it on. Give us a call at the shop (or PM me) when you get a chance and we can go from there
cheers.

Get rid of the typhoon. When they were first released K&N had some design flaws and the intakes were not working at all and people had to send them back to get the problem fixed. The other thing was that they were putting too much oil on the filters and it was covering the MAF sensor and causing cars to run like absolute *hit.
How much will it be to get it tuned to see what we are looking at? Will the tuning actually make up and then help the almost COMPLETE second I lost in the 1/4 mile??? I figured after getting the intake, exhaust, and DP I should be in the VERY low 13's at the worst, since I ran a 13.5 several times stock with a conservative launch which would result in a mid-low 1.8 60'

Because like you are saying, I don't want to have it tuned, waste more money and actually make more power running the stock box again!

Call Mynes, and I think you will see that the tuning is more affordable than you anticipated.
