You already know how to fix and paint stuff ... get a hold of a tweaked one for super cheap and do it up right the first time.
There are those that disagree with me, but the Japanese bikes really suck on setup. The first thing is they all have **** poor clipon handlebars. Swap those babies out for some 'real' race ones that a nice and wide. Your wrists and kneedraggers will thank you the first time out. Every Japanese bike is tuned like crap from the factory, and at high-altitude its worse. You don't need a fancy intake or filter, just a good tune. A bike is much more enjoyable if the power band is nice and linear.
Don't scrimp on tires. BattleAxes are not made for "the street" just because they last super long. My favorites are all coming from Continental right now. I've really enjoyed the sport attack, but everybody has their opinion.
The last fun thing that's quite hard to setup is the suspension, especially the rear. Plan on something expensive as it'll affect your handling very dramatically. The fronts may look prettier, but the rear is where you can feel confident. Get a friend that can help you keep your bike up for when you set static ride height.
Enjoy!
