if you have out of state tags, calfornia smog does not apply. however the car must remain registered in that other state and if it is registered to you you must register the car in california, unless you maintain a residence in the other state.

Nope...he means if you maintain a residence here (i.e. live in a place in CA & pay state taxes) and do not maintain a home in TX (i.e. have a home in TX & pay state taxes there instead of CA) then you would have to register the car here...

On the plus side, at least the smog check places don't have AWD dynos... just the sniffer.

I think if you're in Ca. longer than 6 months, you have to register and get tags for CA, although I know quite a few people who went 1 or 2 years before getting harassed by cops about it. As for your exhaust, you'd still have to comply with the noise restriction, but they probably can't bother you about cats and stuff... at least not until you register in Ca.

The emissions sucks here, come come!! lol, jk. Keep your out of state tags as long as you can, until the other state kicks u out cuz ur not living there. Or you can be like everyone else and mod the hell out of ur car and then put everything back together the night before ur test.

Oh I didn't know you were military. Aren't you allowed to claim a permanent residence and not have to get new state tags? Ask some of your military buddies, I am sure that as long as you have a home or a family member's home in another state somewhere, you can claim that as your permanent residence and have your current location as your mailing address while in the service. That should get you around the smog law.

everything urbanknight posted is correct...I used to be in the military and currently work with them as a civilian...

Don't change your military home of record to a California address and you will be fine. You can continue to keep your car registered out of state and re-up your driver's license out of state...

The cops can pull you over...they aren't supposed to, but they sometimes will still give you a ticket. All you have to do is show up in court and its gets dropped. My friend was recently ticketed for California BS laws and all of it was dropped when he went to court.
