Aftermarket exhaust in Hawaii?
Aftermarket exhaust in Hawaii?
So it's getting closer for me to be transferring out to Hawaii and was just wondering how the cops are with modified exhausts over there. And how about emissions? Want to set up and tune the car for max performance and still staying somewhat within regulations. Mainly just don't want to get harrassed by the cops for dumb stuff. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Mostly is safety check here. Ive seen ppl with loud exhaust and they still pass the safety check. Safety check is lights, license plate, airbag, no wires sticking out your engine lol. Battery tied down. If you see my mods in my sig that tells you all. Also i have springs too and still pass, some other guys here are lower than me and they pass.
It depends on the area also, if u drive a modded car in Waikiki you will likely get pulled over. Passing safety is easy since it is once a year. If u have coilovers u might need to get a reconstruction sticker...it is required for modded cars in Hawaii, u will fail safety chk if u dnt have recon.
dee is giving you facts... Honolulu County (not all of Hawaii just Oahu) laws suck... I dont have issues with my X cause my wife is a local and my car is far from a daily so I dont take it into Waikiki EVER. My daily Denali is dropped 4/5 on 24's and it does have a recon sticker. One thing about the recon that will stop MOST coilovers from passing is the bounce test... suspension must have 2inches of travel (GHEY)
I work in Waikiki and let me tell you this.. I got a 2012 Evo X, 20% Tint (Illegal), Custom Exhaust louder than 95db (Illegal), Catless/Tespipe (Illegal). Drive with cops next to me everyday like its (Legal).
I was very hesitant on doing any of those mods as I am in Waikiki everyday. I weighed out the possibilities of getting pulled over vs not. Asked a few shops and people about their experiences with these mods and the laws that enforces.
Let's just say my cousin runs 5% on all windows including windshield.
Honolulu is pretty lenient just don't act a fool and police will not bother you.

^^^ You are lucky man.....you must have hookups on passing safety check with 20% tint. Yes its true that Honolulu is a lot more lenient now than before since Recon is mainly on suspension mods now. Some cops are cool some aren't I guess majority of the cops now are from our generation so they dont bother us unless we are f'ing around.
I wouldnt say that any of those are all facts... ask Jose LOL Bottomline the more mods you have the more attention you will get. My car wasnt on island for an hour and I got pulled over on Nimitz, but since I had just taken it off of the port they let me go. I even got pulled over in my truck to check my recon...
OMFG I just got pulled over... mother F* Coming down the Pali east bound.. But, only speed ticket lol. $142 52 on a 35 F***. Karma? Lmfao. I get caught same place twice already lol. Mods are okay even had the Officer follow behind me on his bike to the next bus stop over.

You wouldn't have to worry about passing smog or anything like that but you will have to be careful of where you drive your car.
I got a ticket once a while for my exhaust being to loud. I really got pull over for recon but once I told the cop my rims and ride height was stock he said oh okay I am going to give you a ticket for your exhaust.
Most likely you are not going to be able to pass inspection because of a aftermarket exhaust... so you will have to find a person you could by pass the system with... I had to pay 60 bucks everytime I had to go for safety. But its the price for modding just like everywhere else you go.

But now you're starting to make me worry too lol.
thanks for the info guys. sounds like i will have way more problems with the law enforcement than enjoying driving the car there. think i have made up my mind and decided not to ship the evo out with me. thanks again.
