If your coming over for military you only have to smog check if you want base tags, other wise your fine. O unless your from someplace like CO were if you are in a state that requires smog you will smog.

Will have to have mine smogged soon for the first time for me. My question is are they tough about simple things like boost gauge and a mbc because you're rerouting the vacuum lines?

Who is going to be looking at your car? A random smog tech or a referee?

Smog tech probably won't notice it or care if they see it and so long as the parts you installed do not involve anything emissions related, they won't trouble you about it. Things like air flow, exhaust and fuel might be a problem for you. Intakes, exhaust manifolds and injectors will be noticed no question.

Just taking to local shop, still have the stock manifold and will have the cat in place for test. Just didn't know if they get tedious about following all the vacuum lines. I've had a few modified cars before the evo just none that were turbo so was wondering specifically how much the small shops dig into them looking for things to fail you on

So long as all the major components are there, you'll be fine for the visual.

Hey guys. I'm moving to the SF Bay Area in the fall, and I'm starting to plan the changes I need to make to my 2008 Evo X GSR to get registered in CA.

I currently have an AMS intake, UICP, intercooler, catback exhaust, boost gauge, and ecuflash tune.

Based on what I've read here, I'll need to:
Switch to an AEM or Injen intake
Take the sticker off my crinkle black UICP (maybe it can pass as stock?)
Hope they don't notice the intercooler (no logos or anything)
Flash back to a stock image in case they do a new ODBII scan for known images

Would that work? It's a pain and sucks, but I don't want any trouble.

I'm also worried about leaving the exhaust. It's kind of a trick unit that has silencer disks that can be inserted to change the sound level. They go in between a joint in the piping with a clamp, and you'd probably never know they were there unless I told you. Think its ok?

Thanks for the help!

from my experience with dealing with a California State Smog Ref. he did not get me for my UCIP and LICP. however i did get hit on the intake piping. mine is a injen and it did not have the carb sticker. injen also will not send me one and i do not know why nor have they responded to my e-mails. they will not get you for your intercooler either. as for the OBDII scan i am not sure since they are still not doing that test in my area yet.

Update: I did the E85 conversion, and got my hands on a stock cat. Passed with flying colors:

CO2 Idle 15.10
CO2 2500rpm 15.10
O2 Idle 0
O2 2500 0
HC Idle 7
HC 2500 8
CO Idle 0.23
CO 2500 0.01

I'm curious how much of this is the E85 vs the stock cat, though it certainly seems like you'll want to keep the stock cat on for any type of emissions test. Our cars just have no way of passing with the HFC, at least in CA. (I was able to pass many moons ago on the east coast using HFC). Next time I'll try E85 + HFC, and see how that turns out.

Quote: Thought I'd chip in here with my recent experience. I have various mods, but the most important two being S2 cams and a Helix HFC. I went in for a test and failed spectacularly, logging over 1000HC @ idle, and just tad bit over @2500rpms. I presume ODBII cannot report on the HC count, so they must have still been using the sniffer. I'm planning on sourcing a stock cat, and doing a conversion to E85. These two combined should take care of smog for many following years.

It's worth noting that my smog read out had this line "Reason for test: High Emitter Profile". So it would seem that the Evo and likewise other sports cars are probably being targeted more as they get older and older.

Does anyone know if its ok to smog test your car 2 months before the renewel is due? I have access to a cat for the next month or so but I have not yet received my renewel notice. I think the smog is good for 90 days but it's been a while since I was told that.

I wonder how the data will look like with just pure e85 and no cats.

Correct.....Smog certifications are good for 90 days from the date of issuance.

Quote: Any and every car brought to CA by a private party will face the rollers AFAIK.

Prepare your anus.

Oh, and welcome to CA!
ugh, I just signed to relocate to the bay area.

It's painfully obvious my Evo will never ever pass inspections. But I'm seriously considering transferring it into my dads name and never registering it in Cali.

The bull**** part about this is I would be happy to configure it to pass smog or at least try. Its the fact none of my parts are CARB approved that kills it.

Whats the best local bay area general car forum?
