CHP cracks down on speeders on I-280
By Chuck Carroll
Mercury News
Interstate 280, connecting San Jose and San Francisco, enjoys recognition as ``the world's most beautiful freeway.''
But a fair number of motorists there surely aren't going to like what they'll be seeing in their rearview mirror today: a cop striding up to their car, ticket book in hand.
Be forewarned: The California Highway Patrol has dispatched a ``speed team'' to a stretch of 280 between Mountain View and San Bruno with instructions to pull over and ticket vehicles going even 5 mph over the posted speed limit this afternoon.
The crackdown is part of a larger Bay Area campaign by the CHP moving from place to place that is aimed at getting motorists to ease off the accelerator a bit. Speed is considered the leading factor in crashes involving serious injury or death.
The speed teams recently blitzed speeders on Interstate 80 east of San Francisco. The CHP says the crackdown there slowed traffic and reduced accidents.
On Thursday, the blitz moves to Highway 4 from I-80 to I-680 during the afternoon hours.
Not all the locations the CHP is targeting each week are being made public. The campaign, which uses surveillance by radar and by air, began last November.

My understanding is that would be dropped in court. They allow a 10% variance, and most cops casually say 10 over. I was cited for 75 in a 65, so that's more than 10% and I just took my medicine. But 5 over is too little, their guns can be off by that much.
They did something similar here in Phoenix (Scottsdale) with the Loop 101 "the most dangerous freeway in town", writing tickets for 5 over the limit. I think it lasted about 4 weeks before they stopped patrolling that area, and now people are back to speeding through there like maniacs again.
