broken sway bar brackets
broken sway bar brackets
Any of your customers experience this yet? I have your sway bar installed on my X on the stiffest setting. I went on a spirited run and wound up understeering like crazy by the end of it. Looked under the car and found that the sway bar twisted in the brackets. The rear bolt on the passenger's side and the front bolt on the driver's side are gone. Any input is appreciated. I'm having stronger brackets made, but you should put a disclaimer on your product that warns of this problem!

Only other suspension related mods are your .9" ride springs and AME TM-02 18x9.5 on the stock tires.

We haven't seen this problem before.
I'm going to show this to engineering, but my initial reaction is to double check with who installed it that the bracket bolts were tightened all the way as mentioned above. Those brackets really shouldn't be under too much stress as the sway bar will move around (twist) inside the bushings quite freely when properly lubed. It looks like the brackets are intact and just the bolts are missing. The endlinks and the sway bar itself of course are what bear the brunt of the stress from the sway bar loading and unloading.

I have installed a rear sway bar before. I had two friends helping me who aren't exactly new to modding either. The install is the least of my worries. I personally torqued down those bolts to spec AFTER the car was lowered back down according to the instructions included AND the advice from Pete. The brackets are bent completely out of shape. Yes, I probably should have stated that the bolts being ripped out were probably the main problem, but the brackets are unusable (or broken, or whatever you'd like to call it) as a result. To add insult to injury, the logo is upside down on the sway bar.
I will definitely pick up stronger bolts, but the stock ones are grade 7 to begin with... I've only heard of this happening while tracking heavy cars like M5's, so I was just seeing if there were any other problems like this reported, seeing as this is the heaviest Evo ever made. The dealer wants $15 for EACH bracket + tax + me driving 20 miles to get them. I'd rather just have someone weld up some stronger ones for that price.
I should also mention that my trunk is gutted completely and the muffler section has been replaced with straight pipes that weigh probably 12 lbs tops. I don't know how greatly that would affect the handling characteristics of the car vs a stock car.

Not trying to doubt anyone's tech abilities but we always recommend that are parts be installed by authorize works dealers when possible. That being said we've been running our rear sway bar at full stiff for the last several months, including track days, and have had no issues. Also I'll have to double check but I believe those rear bolts use a metric rating for strength, not the standard sae "grade" measurement.
good luck with the new mounts. Be sure to run a tap through all the bolt holes (even the non stripped ones) before you reinstall the bar.
