Gauges install
Gauges install
hey,
currently in the process of doing gauges (boost/vaccuum, oil temperature, oil pressure) and ive used some diy over various sites, but they dont go into much detail or
there not for lancers
this install is done on a 2006 automatic 4g69 lancer CH ES (RA)
i got my guages off ebay, there not fantastic but they are ok and will do the job.
***disclaimer*** i am not responsible for anything that goes wrong etc, this job requires cutting/splicing wires and engine parts, if u dont feel comfortable doing
this then dont (i was hesitant but did n e way lol)
this is best done on a cold engine as it requires some work in the engine bay(it gets hot under there)
1. remove the plastic manifold cover, there are 3 screws holding it down, unscrew them and be careful not to drop them into the engine(pita to find), there is also a
hose on the left side that is being guided, just move it off, and then lift the front part up and pull forward and it should slide out of the clips
this is what it should look like, note the PVC hose - the one b/w the intake manifold and the valve cover:

2. next i hooked up my boost/vacuum gauge (also before i hates ask why i have a boost, is coz im going turbo) depending on your guage this may vary, but essentially
mine had 3 wires, RED = to positive power, black = ground (-) and orange which spose to go to lighting switch but i didnt coz the guage works without it.
so what u need to do it remove the center console, (remove the 2 screws in the armrest part, lift it up and then remove the other 2 screws and also the other 2 screws
in the footwells and take that part out - careful not to pull to hard as there are wires connected, all u need to do is unclip the white harness)
that white clip that u uncliped has a brown and white wire coming out of it, what u need to do is tap into that wire and that will be your power supply - note this
wire only has power when the key is turned to ACC or further - see number 1 in diagram.
then what u need to do is get a ground wire, this can be done by wiring to the bolt here aswell, just unscrew it a little bit, wrap a bit of exposed wire under the
washer and bolt back down, see number 2 in diagram
i added a fuse in the power line for just in case but i dont think it is necessary, then all u need to do is run the wires up to under the dash area and replace the
center console
also ignore the other wires thats from a underdash lighting kit,

3. ok now what u need to do is run the boost/vaccum hose from where u are mounting the gauge to the engine bay, my grommet hole thing was full up from other wires so i
had to drill another hole next to it, becareful if u need to drill - it is best to have some1 in the engine bay watching while u drill from inside the car.

4. the PCV line has some foam stuff on it to keep heat off or something, i just tore it neatly(to hard to cut) along one side so i could reuse it, but in hind site u
could leave it as is.
cut the line in half and attach your TEE valve and make sure it is on tight then attach ur hose.

5. ok so run ur wires and hose to where u are going to mount your guage, i have mine on the steering column so i ran them up there.
now connect the appropriate wires and hose and test if it works _before_ you mount anything.
6. i had a gauge pod so i put it in that but it would sit too high

so i took off the bottom and made it so it would sit lower and screwed it on sideways,
what u do is position the gauge pod how u want and mark it with something then drill it, to remove the steering wheel column cover, just look underneath and there are
3 screws, undo them and them pull or seperate with a screwdriver as its also clipped on

7. put it all together now and view your finished result

any suggestions or additions are welcome
also here is a sneak peak of the oil pressure and temp guages
note the awesome job on the wiring!!!

Not to trash your thread steve but i found an easier way concerning your power hookup.(i just hooked up 4 gauges last weekend) I may do a thread on it all later.
For power what i did was this...
Look on your fuse box and you see all the rows of mini fuses an then two big ones on the right side. Go to the last row of mini fuses on the bottom an go to the empty one on the left.
You will see that there is a place for a fuse but there is a little tab that is preventing you from placing one in there. I broke the little tab with a flathead an placed something that you can get from autozone or advance.
(basically what it is a device that plugs into the fuse socket has a place to put a fuse in it an has a red power cord coming out of it.) Dont know the name of it but it was like 6 bucks. I threw in a 10 amp mini fuse an wired all my gauges to it. Bingo! im hot an there is plenty of little spots to ground out around there as well.
For the illumination wire i lucked out an my alarm guy had spliced into it at the wire budle that runs down the side of your floorboard. ( i cant rem what color it was but it was the only place i could find one that kicked on an off when you clicked on the lights so you will have to use a test light.(its in the bundle that runs down your floor an up to you dash in the bottom left hand corner.
It just makes it so you can keep all your wireing at the corner you have your gauges thats all.
