How does MIVEC exactly work?

I just bought my '05 RA in April...what is mivec technically and when does it kick in etc...it seems like around 3500rpm...the longer i keep it in a gear before shifting, will i gain more acceleration from it?...just curious..still have a lot to learn mechanically, i just love to drive this car.

MIVEC is Mitsubishi Innovative Variable valve timing and Electronic Control. It adjusts the intake cam x.xxx degrees when you get past a certain rpm. Same basic idea as Hondas Vtec, but vtec uses a different cam lobe, while mivec just advances or retards the valve timing depending on your rpm range. Ideally you want to have earlier closing of the intake valve at low rpms and later closing at high rpms.

That’s just stuff they put on the engine to make it run really really fast lol

Basically, the MIVEC works on the princple of oil pressure to lock a set of rocker arms so that the second lobes of the camshafts comes to play.

If you look at the previous 1.6Mivec engine, the camshaft has two lobes (Honda has three), the low and high lobes. On the valve end, there are two rocker-arm assemblies (a pair to each pair of valves with locking pins). When off the MIVEC rpm range, both lobes are turning with the camshaft but because the pin at the rocker arm is not locked in, the high lobes are still 'not working'. At a certain RPM (4800rpm to 5500rpm), the ECU sends a signal to trigger the solonoid (think the spelling is wrong). The solonoid basical opens the 'gate' and through oil pressure in the engine, pushes the locking pins to locks the rocker arms togather. Since the high lobes have a higher lift profile, the low lobes goes 'off line'......

Think it should be the same for the current Mivec engines.......

it depends if yer racing or crusin tryin to get best gas mileage when yer asking about shifting. Obviously u want to switch at the lowest RPM possible for best gas mileage, not to sure bout racing.

I think this has been answered, but here is my theory:
MIVEC is when the gnomes living in your engine take a shot of meth and Red Bull, then start cranking the engine REALLY FAST! Should have been named GMRBBS (Gnome Meth Red Bull Boost System).

Doesn't seem like this was answered very well.

I know the Evo 9 Mivec is VVT, but does it use the twin lobe camshaft like in this youtube clip?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgDdbrMh6bo (28sec to 1:15)

Or is the evo 9 mivec system something different from the older systems?

Cheers, Mike

You have two different profiles on your cam at 3500 the cam switches to the second lobe to allow the valves to stay open for a longer period of time and more can be taken in and exhaled
