When was the fluid last changed?

The fill plug is located on the forward side (relative to the car, not the engine) of the tranny, near the clutch restrictor valve (if you still have it). It's a 17mm bolt head that says OIL on it.

How many miles are on the car? Personally, if I didn't know when it was last changed, I would change it just so I know for sure. Needs to be changed every 30,000 miles.

Are you the first owner? If not I would definately do it as I have found most people do not change the tranny fluid at the recommended 30K. I think 75W90 is the recommended oil. I use redline MT90. Others like BG Sycroshift. Otter know which syncromesh/sycroshift fluid works best.

The drain plug is on the driver's side of the tranny, near the bottom, beneath the axle shaft. It's a huge plug, 22 or 24mm, I can never seem to remember which.

I've been using GM Synchromesh in my RA since the first time I changed the fluid. Almost 100k later, I'm still happy with it. Others have had good results with BG Synchroshift or Redline fluids.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use Mobil1 synthetic gear lube. It's too slippery, and will make for notchy, difficult shifting.

thanks everyone for their input especially Myszkewicz for the pics. I put in pennzoil synchromesh and the shifting is better but i'm going to try BG synchroshift II next
