whats the detent? cause i had this problem with it "poping" out of first almost felt like it was being held a bit but when i looked at first gear and the selector there was no evidence of binding or rubbing on the dogs

presumably its the bolt with the littler spring ball?

My 2nd gear and 4th gear do about the same thing just the 4th gear isn't as bad but still isn't as smooth as my 3 and 5. Those are perfect it's just 1-2 And 3-4. Downshifting into 1st isn't always easy but that's just because the synchro doesn't want you to unless your almost dead stopped.

Can I get a link to the detents for our car or maybe some information on them?
I just tried looking for some stuff and it seems it isn't something that talked about

that is correct Rob, there's once for each shift rail, if the "recessed" spot for the detent on the rail is worn, or the spring in the detent is weak, gears may "pop" out...could also mean there's excessive side-to-side movement of the shaft when torque is applied...

Is this inside the transmission or on the rails where the shifter is connected?
Because when I was installing my short shifter I noticed the right rail was having a little difficultly coming out when moving the shifter around through gears. But maybe it's just me. I noticed it enough to get it where it's as far out as it comes and grease it to hope to make it slide better, did nothing.
Can you explain a little more what detents are or located it would help me out a lot. I been trying to find something on them and can't.

smike's RA is otter's old RA...
he sold it before he moved to texas somewhere...i think 1-1.5yrs ago or so..
I'm not entirely sure on the mileage or the "original trans or not" part tho, but i think i read somewhere it's like 240,000mi or so...im sure hel'll pop in sometime and say for sure what it is..
i know otter told me he ran bg for a while but i think he said he changed it, im not sure to what tho...

Correct. Still has BG2 in it now. 230K at the moment. Original trans.

If subzero ambient temperatures it is notchy. However, it does not pop out of gear. Takes a few minutes to warm up the fluids then shifts clean and smooth.

I know that Smike now owns Otter's RA.

to clarify when i say "pop" out i dont mean driving and it just pops out of gear on me i mean i shift out of first and right before you get into neutral it feels like its grabbing a bit and just pops out of the gear

Same exact feeling happens 1 out of 8 or so shifts depending on the day. Then going into second it feels like the gear is catching a little like you can feel the metal sorta it's weird. It's like it wants to grind but it never does. I think it's in the linkage and not the gears I just don't know what part could be it
