Just curious about redlining

Since I ama stickler about all things 'my car' I was wondering how many of you actually shift at or near redline in each gear?

I'm not one to race the motor and tend to 'baby' my shifts in or about the 4000 RPM range in each gear.

I'm wondering how many of you do the same or actaully **** closer to redline. I'm just one curious fool who has done it both ways in my old *** Nissan but it never felt like it was doing the motor anygood on short trips to shift up near redline. Obviously there is a redline for a reason but thought i'd post up and see what ya'll had to say!

well obviously the more rpm the harder on ur engine it is but the redline is a max, so if ur lookin to baby it then keep shiftin the way u have but if u shift too soon ur gonna kill ur clutch, but at about 4k u should be fine that where i usually shift unless somebody is tryin to race

Actually I don't think it's a function of shifting too soon as much as it is shifting right. You can shift your car at 2000 in 1st as long as you tap the gas to bring the rpms up to match when you engage the clutch. Basically, if you can get to the point that when you shift you can't feel a sudden acceleration or decelerationn as the clutch engages your doing good. It's the suddden acceleration when you engage the clutch (+ or -) that tell you that the clutch is beign worn on. I hope this helps or at least makes sence. Personally I shift at about 3000 to 4000 rpm depending on the gear.

P.S. If someone thinks I may be wrong on my statement above feel free to say so, I'm not a expert on trans; but from what I do know of physics and enginering (Physics major) the above statement is correct.

I think your statement is correct in some aspects. Shifting without the accel/decel is better on your transmission. But still when you shift at 5500/6000rpm you are causing a lot more stress on your engine(shear). But I shift at 3500-4000 just because when I get bored and hot rod my car around town I drop down to like 22-23mpg which is insane. So I would much rather get 25mpg and shift earlier, because I am never in a huge hurry to get anywhere.

I am not even going to argue any of this. I shift my car at red line and/or fuel cut all the time and I havent had a problem with ANY of my mitsubishi's when doing that. I have had at least 10-12 different models including the Eclipse, Mirage, Lancer, 3000GT, and I have NEVER...EVER had a engine problem due to revving my motor too hard. The only problem I have ever had with revving hard is bad gas milage. THATS ALL!!! So if you are worried about shifting at high RPM, dont stress it. Enjoy your car.

I have brought my car up to redline on numerous occasions and while on the freeway late nights. But generally I shift at about 3-3500. Thats when the exhaust rumbles the most

Almost all the time around 3500, except when merging etc. and need more zip. Why stress things unnecessarily? And why increase your gasoline costs 20% or more just to wind it up all the time?

O'lla, well, I don't yet own my RA, I'd think shifting at 3,000-4,000 would be best for casual driving...however, if you're feelin the need to work some **** out, or to show someone in a Civic what a real car can do, I wouldn't be afraid of touching the redline

just because you shift at redline doesnt mean more power. our highest hp gain comes at 5750 rpm, if you shift at/around this you will help your engine and get the power, just my thoughts

I'm still driving the Subaru. I bought a Lancer ES for the daughter instead of the RA for me. That gives me some more time to waffle between RA and Evo and save up more for the down on whatever I get.

I read an article saying shifting at redline can actually cost you performance. Ideally, one should shift at a point above the hp peak that puts them in between the hp and tq peaks after the shift. I don't know if that's always true or not but if the peaks are far enough away from redline it seems like it would be true.

In response to Mitsumichael7, sure you can shift at redline all you want if you're gonna sell your car and buy a new one every what? yr? you've owned 10 cars? so for the rest of us who cant afford to buy a new car every yr, and plan on driving ours for 10+yrs driving at redline all the time WILL cause engine problems.
