Timing belt broke (need some advice)
My timing belt broke which sadly resulted in my pistons smashing some of my valves. How much should it normaly cost to get a problem like this fixed? Would it be something I could fix myself? Is it better for me to replace the whole engine? Just need some help or hints Thanks
you can swap a motor easily enough...you'll need a couple guys that know what they're doing, a good variety of tools, two jack stands, and floor jack, and an engine hoist...I just did a 2.2L ecotech swap over the weekend for my brother in law's friend...he got the donor car for $400 (one car wreck, didn't go through insurance)and he'll get $200 back from a wrecker with the blown motor in the back seat. problem is finding a lancer ralliart for cheap. that's one option. often you can find just the engine at an auto salvage yard on car-part.com or similar website.
how sure are you that the valves are damaged?
another option is get a timing belt kit, since you'll need it anyway, even if you find a wrecked motor, and you can either install just the belt and check compression, or pull the head, have the valves replaced or repaired by an engine builder. get a new head gasket, and drop it back one, set timing, install belts and bob's your uncle. that's what I did...I did a little write up, if you're wondering what that entails...a full engine swap would take much less time, and the new timing kit is easier to install with the motor out of the car...
here's a link to my timing belt failure.
