DIY mesh grill
I tried doing my grill following the post on the "how tos" thread..looks simple and easy.. but its not as easy as it looks.. i started this project since sunday.. this morning i sanded out the inserts.. and its not an easy thing to do.. specailly sanding out the plastic left overs "V" .. it took me like a whole day just to let the bondo "body filler" dry.. and still the other insert is not fully dry.. i was just wondrin.. on those guys did this project..how look did it take to get the bondo dry??? maybe the weather is concern with the results on mine.. its pretty cold up here..(chicago) some parts of it dried a lil..when i placed them near the heater.. maybe this project turned out to be a challenge to me because i have no experience using bondo.."first timer" haha.. well.. i just hope..this would come up nice.. damn! back to sanding again tomorow.. hope to apply the first coat tommorow.. but its damn cold.. ahhhhhh.. wish me luck guys.. any suggestions would help.. peace!
it was my first time using bondo too. i just used very thin layers of bondo and it didn't seem to take too long to dry. i worked in my basement and it's pretty warm down there. perhaps that's why mine didn't take too long to dry. just take your time. especially with the sanding. when i did it, it turned out a little bumpy, so i had to take the grill out and resand it and paint it. just make sure it's super smooth before applying the paint.
ok if i do this myself...i gotta pretty goo d idea on the basics...but what color would be best to paint the inserts if i have a thunder grey ralliart?? which brand and color would look best?? thnx
probly get the closest automotive spray paint color that would match with ur car.. i have a silver lancer..ill probly do the same.. so it will like like one with the car.. brand.. nothin in particular yet.. im pretty much in sanding still..but its fun doin it.. its takes alot of patience and right judgement.. =)
bubble gum....atleast thats what i would do.. Probably big league chew.
Ok, really, try that 3m double sided tape. They sell it for sticking door trim on. Its really strong stuff. Thats what i would do, unless you have a good apoxi that would bond metal to plastic

Don't use double sided tape.....it isn't durable enough.
What I did was this.
I got some heavy objects to hold the mesh down (after being cut out of course) and used clear MONO. I was pretty generous w/ it and allowed for it to try (a couple hours is good but 4 is better). This works well because it allows for some flex.

i used a cold weld type of material....it's hard as a rock.
people around have been using the "JB WELD" brand of cold weld. I just happened to use the "PERMATEX" brand. it's comes in 2 seperate tubes and when you mix the two 'ingredients' it will become a hardened material in about 4-6 minutes.

yeah..thanks for the infos.. but i wanted to know like how or wer do u attach the mesh.. i know at the back..(obviuosly) but wer in particular.. just wondrin.. i already have an idea how to.. but..im considering other opinions in thier experience. thanks! chaio!
It doesn't "attach" like what you think. you place it on top of the back side of the insert and you just glue it down w/ your choice of adheision (sp). Simple as that....no need to complicate things anymore then that dude.

Go with black or a grey similar to the car color. I saw a RA a couple months ago that was black and the grill had been painted red. It looked pretty tacky. I plan on doing mine in the spring. I have blue LED's behind the grill right now. I'll be damned if I paint the grill blue too. I'm just gonna order the TG touch up and use that for the grill. Or paint it black. After seeing that red grill I've realized that having a color that stands out probably wont look right.
