Exclamation Question: Shift Points and Power Advantages...

The ralliarts redline is 6500rpms, but you can go all the way up to 6800rpms (just found out on an accident). Reading dynos, the RA makes power to about 6100-6200ish, than anything after that it slowly tapers off. I notice that if I shift @ 6100rpms, my tach falls back, but when I shifted @ 6800rpms I got this "push or lunge" power and I fell back higher in the RPMS than shifting @ 6100rpms. Also, when I let it go past 6100 the car felt stronger and had better power @ 6800rpms, but if that's the case, why does power taper off? I definetly felt more power up there. Also, I can achieve a higher speed shifting @6800rpms than 6100rpms... but if the RA doesn't make much power after 6100rpms, why can I accel so much and feel more power? For example, stock vs. stock if I shifted @ 6800rpms to an RA that shifted @ 6100rpms, would I come out on top in the quater mile?

I hope this doesn't sound confusing, but can somebody explain this?

Well, if you let the engine rev higher and then upshift, the gearing will always cause the next gear to start at a higher RPM. That's just gear ratios.

As for performance, I doubt you're actually making more power at 6800. Maybe it feels that way because when you reach that level your speed is a little higher and the engine sounds like it's gonna shake apart. Peak power is at 6100. You want to keep it close to that when you upshift...you want the next gear to work less to reach that powerband.

It's POSSIBLE that shifting later will help keep you in the powerband on an upshift, but if you hit the limiter, you'll get a fuel cut and lose the speed you've built, plus by operating above the recommended range set by the manufacturer, you risk engine/transmission damage that won't be covered by your warranty.

i find its best to redline first and second and then shift around 6-6.2 in 3rd and 4th... the only real way would be to do several runs at a track though

Every time I redlined first gear I couldnt get it into second on the shift. 1-2 is damn near impossible on stock RA @ redline. I've made countless track runs.

i only redline first gear because if shift at 6500rpms my rpms drop to 4500rpms, this happens because the tires are peeling out. so to keep it at 5000 to 5500 rpms i redline. i don't know if anybody know what i'm talking about. when i start redlining the rpms drop down and when it starts to go up then i shift.

When my car was stock, the rev limiter kicked in at 6500-6600rpms
I put on the RRM axle back exhaust, Couldn't tell much there, but when I installed the
AEM SRI, man could you feel a power increase, the car pulls really hard, sounds like a turbo
Then the Mivec kicks in around 5500 RPM's and pulls real hard up to 7000 RPM.
What was weird is the rev limiter doesn't kick in, I haven't pushed it any further but it definatley is making more power than stock. Does the computer adjust to engine modifications?
I also use 93 octane premium!!!

I am a little confused. Mivec kicks in around 5500 RPM?

Yes, the first time is around 3500 RPM's and then again at around 5500 RPM

/\ I was lead to believe that it changes the valve lift once, at 3500ish RPM. Thats it. There isnt a second change.

Mivec.

3 valve heights.

0-3599 rpms:
Valve 1 : Low
Valve 2 : Mid

3600-redline:
Valve 1: HIGH
Valve 2: HIGH

so there is 3 different lifts but only in 2 operating modes.

Nope, one time at 3500 and that's it. There are 3 cam lobes, but TWO different ones are used at the SAME time before 3500RPM.

Edit, I just looked at the post above this, makes good sense
