For the sake of attempting to educate some ignorance, I'm going to link to the press release for this engine.

http://media.mitsubishi-motors.com/p...etail1317.html

Also, apparently BlkMajik stumbled upon this in August in another forum and did some more digging, but neglected to tell anybody here about it. Here's a link he found providing a more domestic point of view.

http://www.allpar.com/mopar/world-engine.html

First, calling this a 4G69 'knock-off' is insulting to the engine, as it would indicate that it's an inferior piece of hardware. The powerplant was re-designed by a team of engineers from three different automotive companies and is based off the 4G69; this hardly qualifies as a knock-off. If you wanna see an existing example of what happens when engineering teams get together and redesign an engine, take a look at the 3.0L V6 powering the Mazda 6, which was build by a team of Ford and Mazda engineers and based off of the yawn-a-riffic 3.0L Duratec V6 powering the Ford Five Hundred.

Secondly, I need to correct an error, this new engine does not use a resin exaust manifold, just the intake. And the fact that it uses a plastic manifold that bends around like this one does and still manages to get more ponies out makes me think that an aftermarket manifold that stays straight might yield some impressive gains. Plus, that stock manifold isn't likely to be tuner friendly.

Third, a head swap is hardly a basic upgrade, and even if it were something a shadetree mechanic could do, where are we going to get one? Mitsubishi certainly isn't going to cough up half the engine for anything resembling affordable, and the Dodge and Hyundai versions won't be compatible since they all apparently are going to use different cams with different profiles (Hyundai is already using a different cam profile for the Elantra then Dodge will use for the Caliber). Hell, even GM, master of all things recycled, doesn't make the heads of their engines compatible from one generation to the next.

For example, the head off a 60 degree FI 2.8L/3.1 V6 from 1988-1991 isn't compatible with the head on the '3100' 60 degree FI V6 from 1992-1996, which isn't compatible with the '3400' 60 degree FI V6 from 1996-2004, which isn't compatible with the '3800' 60 degree FI V6 from 2004-present, despite the fact that all four of these engines are based off the same engine block design. The heads are all different from one another enough that they don't work on other generation blocks.

Don't get me wrong though, I'd love to see that this new MIVEC engine be nothing more then an upgraded 4G69, and the parts are compatible with one another. I just wouldn't hold my breath.

Nice links Kericr! Seeing as how this new 2.4L mivec engine has the exhaust coming out the other side of the block.... I'd say most of the parts are completely different. Different block guarantees different heads. I'd call this one case closed!

Ill just wait till someone crashes and yank that engine out. Then I could put it in my car....heres hoping

YEs - it is looking to be a good motor but definitly a variation of the 420A motor. Looks like they are using Chrysler block, Mitsubishi mivec technology and a new intake manifold variable runner technology as well. Very interesting motor will be interesting to see what mitsubishi vehicles end up with it.

Now that is something I look forward to playing iwth another time
