My Ra Has A Booboo

so i was sitting in the parking lot parked with my flashers on in front of cvs on saturday when an old man in kia mini van backed out of a parking space and crunched my front passenger side door lifting my car up a little then dropping it back down when he pulled up. i was blowing my horn the whole time he was backing into my car and he said that he never saw my car there and he never heard me blow my horn seeing how he had to walk right past my car to get to his van which tells me that he is way too old to be driving anything.

when i looked at the damage it put a lot of dents and crinkles in the door(best way i can describe it) and on his van just some scrape marks so the RA definitely lives up to that poor side impact rating . oh and the guy had the nerve to tell my insurance that its my fault b/c he said that i was driving and i tried to squeeze around him while he was backing out so now i know that im dealing with a real idiot.

ill let everyone know more as soon as my insurance gets back to me. i just needed to vent

Impact ratings don't have much of anything to do with how much physical damage a car takes in an impact. The rating reflects how well the car protects the passengers.

Anyways, sucks. I know for a fact that, when you're hit around that spot by a car in reverse, the insurance companies will always put blame on the car backing up, since the point of impact proves that you were at that spot first.

Sorry to hear about the RA. But, you take any vehicle's side panel/door, BMW, Merc, Audi, SAAB, etc. and back into it with impact absorbing bumpers, it's going to dent and the bumper will most likely remain unscathed. So your damage would have been the same if the Lancer scored a perfect side impact rating.

DOH, Otter beat me to it!

I think after age 60, people should take a driving test every 1-3 years. Make sure old age dont set in, and to make sure they can still drive.... old peple are weopons behind the wheel. Its scary.

Make sure that old dooshbag pays for everything. Its his fault, not yours. If he claims its your fault, fight that all day long.

^ +1. I'm really sick of elder people causing SERIOUS wrecks, let along fender benders. Something has to change. I say over 55 or 60. Test every year. Or a sliding scale. But I definitely don't think 78 year olds should be driving 10 years without a test.

Sorry about your car dude, I think the person would have had a shorter life if they hit me like that, and had the nerve to say it was MYYYY fault.

even with the made up story he should of yield to you, and it would have scraped your front the front bumper to where the dents ended and probably would have taken out your side view mirror. and i would think they have a security camera there too.

the other day I was turning left at a traffic light. my side was green, as was the other direction. the right hand turn lane has a yield sign, which means there is no green arrow because they NEVER have to stop. I turned into the left lane, far enough in front of a van so that he wasn't even turning by the time I had straightened out the wheel, and the van was turning into the right lane. I got the finger and the horn, when I made him roll down the window the old man told me he had a green arrow I've been of the opinion for years that if you can't tell me what the configuration of the traffic lights was at the light you just drove away from then you shouldn't be driving. I told him he needed to get better glasses and re-evaluate whether or not he should be driving at his age. I got another finger and an eat **** look. all well, at least he didn't hit me. sorry about your door.

man that sucks, hope everything gets worked out.

i'm curious though, if you saw him getting into his van knowing he was going to move and you honking madly at him so that he notices you, couldn't you have just moved out of the way for a second?

Dude you called the cops right? And had them come out? It makes things much better when they come and you have them to back you up?

Heh I hate cops usually

well, in my experience you can't give drivers the benefit of the doubt
i'm not going to guess or assume that driver's going to see me, if i have room to back up alittle or move away from the drivers spot i will. i've had a couple close calls like that recently.

just like those idiots going down the street in the right lane, signaling to turn off into the intersection but keep going through the intersection honking at you for merging because you thought they were going to turn right, just like their turn signal indicated.

he had more than enough room to back out seeing how 10min prior to that a lady backed out of the space next to him with no problem(she had a yukon) i think hes just a little too old to be driving. if you cant see or hear your surroundings that big problem IMO

i did think for a sec to pull up but i didnt want him to hit me while i was trying to get out of his way, of course i ended up getting hit anyway but im sure if i wasnt there to stop his van he probably would have backed up the sidewalk and right into the store
