Well to conclud this interesting problem I have the CEL codes given by the dealership. First code P0101 next P2173 then P0431. Final problem Mass air flow sensor. All those problems lead to the car going to what some call LIMP mode.

Did you get this straightened out? I only ask because my car just did almost the exact same thing. P0101, P2173, and mine threw P0500 instead of P0431.

Strangest part was, I was 20 uneventful miles into a 27 mile ride home. I pulled out from a stop and sped up to 55 on a highway, it lurched like it missed for a couple revolutions, then ran like crud for the next four miles, but kept going 55-60. When I slowed down to 35 coming into town, it just kept on slowing down until I crawled it over to the shoulder. It didn't have enough power to get up the hill even in first gear. I had to get a lift home and pull it with my truck and a tow strap.

No recent changes to the car, other than having the P0442 evap emissions leak hunted down and fixed a week ago at the local dealer.

Update: Turned out to be a bad mass airflow sensor. I hooked my laptop up to the OBDII port, and also connected to the RRM piggyback. Everything but the airflow signal seemed in good working order, so I went looking for one of those after unplugging and replugging mine had no effect. I dropped $75 on a lightly used one out of a V6 Endeavor (same part #) and put it in.

I reset the trouble codes with my scan tool, and started it up. Idles like it used to. I gave it the time to idle down, then took it for a spin to the gas station. Everything seems to be back to normal.

Bottom line, if you get P2173 and P0101, change your MAS.

Adding it to the list of parts on my car that I'm expecting to fail.

Sorry for the late reply. Yah I got it all fixed up and its running great now. One other thing to note I am still getting CEL code 0431 and I have the RRM eliminator. Does anyone else know of a fix? Sorry if this has been answered a million times.
