Tranny swap? EASY????
Tranny swap? EASY????
I toasted my syncros in my tranny so i bought a new one and am waiting to install. Is it hard to do? Has anyone done it? Advice and comments are welcome!

Ours isn't particularly hard, really. No need for a lift, just get the car nice and high on jackstands, have two jacks handy, and you'll have enough room. With a friend helping me (he was experienced at it) we had the trans removed and reinstalled (for a clutch swap) in 3 hours. I imagine that, doing it for the first time and by yourself, probably a 5 hour job, maybe.
Drain the fluid, remove the axles (can just remove the driver's side, then disconnect the intermidiary shaft mount and use the flex to remove the passenger side from the trans without having to pull the axle from the hub.) Support the engine with one jack, remove the two mounts that are connected to the trans (and anything else connected to it.) Finally, unbolt the bellhousing from the engine and maneuver the trans out from there. Our trans is light enough that my friend (MitsuJoe) was able to bench press it out (and back in.) I would recommend using a jack instead.
