well I'm going to try to jack up my car later today and test for play in the wheel, see if maybe it's not a wheel bearing going bad. well that wouldn't account for the clicking I'm getting when turning at a stop, but it would explain the clunking I get over bumps and the sort of "warbling" I feel through the wheel at higher speeds.

as for the clicking I'm thinking either a CV or this mysterious "strut bearing". Where would one buy a "strut bearing"?

i beleive it come with the kit you ca buy for the top of the strut mounting plate. if not the stealer ship would know..

to clear that up^^ it should come in the shock mounting kit for the front. i think there like 30 bucks a pop for the whole top piece

strut mount you mean?
KYB part number is SM5461, i think...

anyways, you check your strut mount. have a buddy turn the steering wheel for you, while you get a screwdriver, place the pointy end on the top of the strut mount (Touching), and then you ear on the handle end. it acts like a stethoscope, and you can be sure whether or not it is the strut that the sound is coming from.

see this image: http://ed-thelen.org/1401Project/CT-...oscope-01-.jpg

screwdrive doesn't have to be that big though =P. also works with crowbars, wrenches, and other solid things.

let us know your findings

yes that kit should contain the whole top end and should have it all there. its more so a bushing then a bearing but ether way its still does what it does.

Anyone know if we can use the driver's side cv axle from the Lancer es/ls/oz rally? I called a dealer and tried to match part numbers from my '04 manual ralliart to an '06 oz rally w/ ABS and the part numbers came back different, but they were the exact same price (~$900).

So far, I've checked with Raxles, EMPI, Cardone, and a couple of other remmanned shops and nobody has an axle specific for our car. Indianapolis Rack has one, but at $250 (unit + core + ship), the price is more than I would like to spend.

I'm very surprised to hear that Raxles didn't have them. That's where I used to get axles for my DSMs, for about $100 each.

I ended up buying the Indianapolis Rack and Axle unit. Oddly enough, they tried to charge me tax on an out-of-state purchase. The guy who worked there persisted that he has always charged tax, and that even he paid tax on his purchases. Last time I checked, resellers shouldn't pay tax, and the U.S. Constitution says something about preventing taxation on interstate commerce. They ended up taking the tax off, but I thought other people interested in buying from these guys should be aware.

Left Front CV Axle - $150, $75 Core charge, $15 shipping (ea. way, I think)

update on my situation.. i replaced my front shocks and mounts this last weekend, hoping to relieve myself of this clicking/spring winding situation. unfortunately the sound is still there.. i think my problem seems to be my CV axles. still can't tell if it's left or right, i guess ill give it a closer look this weekend

on a positive note, replacing my shocks made a world of difference in my comfort during my drive

mine was making the exact same noise and i took it to the shop, mechanic said i needed new axles, he sent them off to be reman'd, cost about $550.

that was a while ago and now she doesn't click or anything.
although i think i am hearing my shocks creaking a bit...
anyway, hope i helped out a bit.

I know this is an old thread, but i searched and rather than starting a new one i'm just going to ask it here. Jabl3s did you ever figure out what the problem is? plus I did the screw driver test on the strut and I hear a noise, but i dont know if this noise is suppose be there or if it is suppose to be quiet when you are listening.
