Mini-Battery

Okay, my Odyssey PC680 battery is beginning to slow down. I'll need a new one soon. After much research I believe it's the baking-oven-engine-bay this thing lives in at the track that's aging it prematurely. I'm going to move him indoors, ya know. Maybe under the passenger seat (its safe, no fumes).(Cranswick, this is true, think about placement 'cause your turbo runs cherry red)

Anyway, besides getting another PC680 or an equivalent Deka, there is an interesting Lithium Iron option, made by Shorai. It's more money but I could try it and report back here. The thing is, it weighs four frigging pounds for a 405 CCA unit the same size as the PC680 (222 CCA)! The stock battery is about 40 lb and the PC680 is 15 lb.

Question: is there something I'm missing here? Evo and wrx guys are beginning to try this thing but I haven't read much in the way of reports.

Check it out: http://saskbattery.com/default.html

End of story. Got in the car to drive to track on Monday, battery won't turn engine over. I phoned the battery guys, told them my story, and they basically said the 4 pound lithium one is new to everybody so maybe wait and see how it behaves for others over the next year. So I just ordered another PC680, will mount it in the car away from excessive heat. I'll post some pics of that work soon (gotta finish building deck now. I fell through the third set of "temporary" rotted stairs at the back door so wife went nuts.)

... The link you provided, those guys are in my home town. Haha.

Someone suggested I look at a mini battery a few days ago at a car show... maybe I'll go pick one up after the next couple of pay periods and do a relocate?

Is there a relocate kit available or would that be another classic RA DIY?

U should just be running ur lines that r connected to ur + terminal to ur bat where ever its relocated, I want mine in the trunk, then u could just reground it wherever ur new spot is, I might throw in a fuse if its going to be a long run though on + wire incase something were to burn.

Had my AMS small battery die while at Calabogie Motorsport Park in July (Ontario, CA). Try finding one of those in the outback of Canada. Guys at the speed shop at the track said the nearest one they could track down was in Toronto. Ha! Luckily had a buddy with a jump box who lent it to me to get back to NYS.

Problem with relocating a small battery is you end up with pounds of cable added back in taking away the weight loss. I bought another AMS battery (last one lasted 2 years), but I've thought about just getting a regular battery, relocate it behind the passenger seat (full cage negates the rear seat), and thus gain the advantage of tossing any full-size battery in the car if it dies again. lol @ wife/stairs rage... and lol at realizing OP is from ON. Got any hints of where I can find one of those small batteries if this ever happens again at Calabogie?

Does the Odyssey PC680 have enough cold cranking amps to start the car if it were located in the trunk and in the dead of winter? Ive been debating on getting a small battery like that model but I wasnt sure if it had the OOMPH to crank the car if it were wired way in the back. I wouldn't be against it being under the passenger seat either if I could make some sort of case for it.

Oh and one more thing. Would that battery hold up with subs in the car too? Sorry for all the questions Ive never used one of these and Ive been rather skeptical.

Calabogie is MUCH closer to Ottawa than Toronto, and Ottawa/Gatineau have quite the "tuner" scene, a lot of performance shops...

The problem with batteries dieing is either your running to much with the car not on or that ur pulling more power than ur alternating is putting out when ur car is on. So with subs ud def have to run with the car on and ud want to check ur alt power output and see if its enough instead of worring about the battery.

The step up from the PC680 is the PC925, it is a beast yet about 15 lb lighter and smaller than stock. This is what the Sask guy recommended and I see Ziggy (RTM) has it as his "bigger" option too. I would get the 925 if I used the car in winter which I don't.

As for a monster sound system, as Juanharu said it's your alternator that supplies juice for that. If you need more amps you get a higher power alternator, and also a big capacitor to handle any temporary huge draws by the subs . The battery is basically used just to start the car (oh, and to power the radio while I drink beers in the driveway).

Yes, Ottawa is the place to shop, can get anything there since its near Quebec and those guys are insane hardcore with cars and motorcycles.

Took the 1.5 hr drive to Ottawa, but beyond Canadian Tire and their subsequent referral to Total Battery (which was closed), I didn't find much. At least I can say I've been to Ottawa now.

PFFT! Canadian Tire barely even has an automotive department anymore, get replacement bulbs there, and not much else...they don't even carry the proper spark plugs for my car...
