The maf, a custom sri and the 3 days of fun together.
The maf, a custom sri and the 3 days of fun together.
So I had an excellent Idea to make a custom SRI.....and heres the story of what happened.
DAY 1: IT all starts when I get on the ebay machine and fine me a filter, the cheapest aem one I could which was a total steal, 23 dollars never used.
Side note on the story at this time im totally pysched
DAY 5: I wait and wait and it comes
, Its HUGE, 4x9. I look under the hood and it all looks good, my plan is to go to lowes the next day.
DAY 6: I get to lowes and bring the filter with me, I make sure I can fit everything to filter, it ends up with me buying a 3inch coupler, 3inch pipe and a couple elbows for the 3 inch
Day 6.5: Get home and take old air box out, the filter is total trash that was in there, no idea when it was changed last (bought car used), goes to test it and forget this thing called the MAF,
It needs to be in the intake tube So i then put everything back together and decide to get an adapter at advanced auto parts the next day.
Day 7 : Drives to advanced auto parts, first store doesnt have it, drives to one in canal winchester they have it *jumps for joy*. I get home and open the package, it is the cheapest piece of crap plastic ever to be made to hold the sensor. I then go to lowes and buy smaller pipes to fit the stock tube. Then I sleep.
Day 8: I take car apart again to find out the air filter (4 inches) the maf adapater (3ish inches) and the intake tube (2ish inches) are all different sizes, So now nothing fits again. I drink some coffe and go back to lowes for the 3rd time I buy everything that fits together
Ps at this point in time I think everything is going to be fine
Day 8.5 : Starts to put everything together, I go to insert maf into adapter, the screw plates dont match up and the adapter plate that does is to small for the main maf to fit in it
time to get some zip ties out
, I then finally get that in when i go and attach the filter/pvc pipe i find it is very heavy, I dont think to much of this.
ps now in this story we have everything to gether, the maf is in with zip ties and the filter is on semi snug but its heavy. Time for a test drive.
*imitates car sounds* It sounds awesome, Im loving it, until i hear a wistle. THen im like
its coming loose, then it falls off from the intake tube to the maf adapter. Car dies from maf miss reading. D:
I then stear car into neibor hood with no power steering in the dark, opens hood and fixes car ( At this point I had to drive home filterless ( i know not a good idea).
Day 8.75: Re situates everything, I just need 1 radiator hose clamp to keep it tight and then this nightmare will be done. :P
Anyways the moral of this long story is make sure to bring all parts into lowes to measure and dont buy crappy adapters from advanced auto parts. and zip ties are awesome
. Pics tmrw.

Hope it works for you but I have a feeling you are going to end up with a CEL. Unless you made sure to keep the MAF pipe the same size or you have a way of adding more fuel VIA piggyback.
On a side note through browsing on ebay I think the 2000 vw jetta maf pipe works not sure on messurments and screw mounting but it still is better than the advanced auto parts one.
And for pic I had work and the sun went down, I promise some tmrw.
As far as testing it goes it feels awesome and theres def a better pick up esp in the higher 4k+ range of rpm. Of course the filter i had before was so bad any change would have helped but u know :P Prob in a few months when I get some more play money Ill probaly change it to a cai instead and see if its anybetter and if its not I might try to make a make shift heat shield.
Id still say the total for this would be $50 which is $200 dollars cheaper than any other semi good intake :P
