Carbon on exhaust tips
Carbon on exhaust tips
I noticed that there is a decent amountof carbon that gets accumulated on the exhaust tips from my 09RA. Anyone else having this little issue? What can be done to prevent that. Is that good or bad? Im a little unfamiliar with this.
Maybe a KN drop in can help?

I've noticed the same thing on my car. Usually a damp terry cloth gets it off the tips pretty easy. Had the same issue in my old 05 Tibby.
If its good or bad...I'm in the same boat.

Even with my full aftermarket exhaust i get carbon build up. Its due to the car running rich which is better than it running lean. Running lean increases temp. Ive heard that it doesnt run as rich as the evo though. I wont have any real data for another week or so.
Your car is just running rich. Most manufacturers tune turbo cars rich to keep them from going boom. Case in point. I can clean the exhaust tip on my MS3, drive to work(40 miles), and the tip will black again. I thought it was odd at first too, but I really don't worry about it. A tune should fix your problem and my problem. I could be wrong.

yep noticed carbon on my tips too..kinda expect it from the turbo..IdriveRA have you logged your data from zchip? is your dyno map the exact one they have posted at the thread?

Doesn't hurt anything and wipes right off so your exhaust can be shiny again if you park it where people will be seeing it.
I would think a tune would lean you out a bit and reduce the carbon buildup plus add a ton of HP.
The Zchip is the way your car it tuned and I bet it could be tuned further to get you more HP and lean it out a bit, but you better talk to TTP about it to make sure your tuning safely.

The only way to prevent it is to not drive the car.
If you want to clean it up, use some 0000 steel wool to remove it and polish the tip, but I'm sure you'll get sick of doing that once per week.

Having a LOT of black carbon on the tip would be a bad thing, but unless you are at 100% combustion of all the fuel and have zero exhaust emissions then you're going to get some build up on your exhaust. Like it was posted earlier, our cars are typically tuned to run rich rather than lean because it's a safer condition.
