Warranty

I just noticed the Ralliart has much less of a warranty than other lancers.

It is only 5/60,000 powertrain the reg lancer is 10/100,000

It is only 3/36,000 Bumper to Bumper and the reg lancer is 5/60,000

That's cause it's an awd turbo. They ain't crazy enough to bet that it'll last 10 years.

I might be mistaken and/or my friend might have purchased an extended warranty, but my friend had 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on his 2005 EVO VIII.

This year's Ralliart, because it has the Evo IX awd drive train, the Evo X motor, and Evo X transmission, ends up with the Evo X warranty (which is just as short).

I got the 10yr bumper-bumper extended from the dealer though, it's good peace of mind cause what concerns me isn't the 3yr b2b or 5yr powertrain, it's the 36/60k mile. I'm planning on putting between 15-20k a year on it so the stock warranty would run out in less than 2 years for bumper to bumper.

Extended warranties are great for peace of mind, but keep in mind that they are always more expensive than covering repairs yourself, on average.

LOL. Doesn't replacing the transmission cost something like 9 grand, out of warranty?

Another factor with extended warranties, many are not from the orig manufacturer, but an independant company, if that company goes out of business, or doesn't back what they say they will the you are sh*t out of luck.

Extended warranties are insurance -- the actual cost of providing that insurance is the average cost of repairs, plus whatever administrative costs the warranty plan incurs. Since businesspeople also like to make profits, extended warranties cost significantly more on average than providing the same coverage out of your own pockets. Yes, you can negotiate the price of anything, but assuming you're not dealing with a moron who wants to lose money, you'll end up paying for the warranty one way or the other (most dealer warranty prices have absurd markups, so 'discounts' aren't as great as they may seem).

This really isn't anything new -- that extended warranties cost more on average is almost as old wisdom as the fact that insurance costs more on average that whatever it covers. Of course, replacing a whole car or house is different than refurbishing a transmission (you have to replace the entire TC-SST now, in 2009, but you won't have to in a year or two, which puts you in pretty good shape for 2013 or 2014, should your transmission be a lemon just out of warranty).

Like I said, it's good peace of mind. Personally I got the 100k mile b2b not so I wouldn't be left with no powertrain warranty after 2-3 years. I drive a lot and I like to drive it... in a spirited manner. If you plan to drive 10-12k miles a year, then there's probably enough coverage on the OEM warranty.
