Topend, what!?!
Well if you're saying 05-06 STI, that makes me think you're not completely subiliterate. The 05 STI looks completely different than the 06. If that's an issue, given the crappy times (for an STI), it makes me think that they weren't STIs at all but WRXs with STI wings (and maybe badges). This isn't meant to be mean, it just seems strange given that the STI is a 13 second car stock.

Launching a manual awd car takes some finesse to do it right (predicated on posts from NASOIC and the defunct wrxforums). Try to launch it like a Honda and you'll just bog, right?
Just because someone drives an STI and takes it to the strip doesn't mean they are great drivers. My buddy's stock Integra Type R was 10 for 10 against another friend's Eagle Talon TSI despite the Talon having the advantage of AWD and more hp. On paper, the Talon should have killed the ITR on every run (both were running new rubber as well). What was the difference? The Talon driver couldn't launch well and in general was a crappy drag racer.

Though I would say that they do more than just bog. Snapping, cracking, bouncing, shuddering, etc. I've heard of quite a few drivers snapping axles and breaking various parts of their drivelines by dumping the clutch on an AWD while launching.
