Oil seeping in intake
Hi guys,
I tried searching but couldn't find anything, even in the Evo X threads.
I noticed a film of oil seeping in the inlet tube towards the air filter box (even some creeping near the MAF area) as I was re-installing my custom 70$ K&N SRI (took it off for a dealer visit early in the winter and waited until warmer weather before tearing apart my knuckles by putting it back...) which worries me that I'll get a CEL sooner or later...
I know for a fact that last Oct/November I didn't see a thing when I went back to stock air box.
Do you think this is simply a case of needing an oil catch can? I wonder what the inside of the intercooler looks now!
I couldn't find any relevant search hits about catch cans so I figure not a lot of people installed one?
No performance decrease or blue smoke noticeable, so I'm not too worried about a turbo bearing leaking, but you never know...How much oil seeping would be too much for simple blow-by? I'll try taking pictures later is needed.
BTW, car is stock (except for DIY K&N SRI) and I don't track it. Only...spirited...daily driving. Car has 25 000 miles in a year.
So, what are you guys thinking about that?
Thanks for you inputs,
Cheers

Very common on turbocharged cars to get a small amount of oil in the intakes feeding back from the crankcase due to the positive pressure present in the crankcase. It shouldn't really cause any major issues but it is the reason that catch cans are marketed.

Thanks for your reply, but I was already familiar with the phenomenon.
Maybe my question was badly worded. In a nutshell, I'm more interested in knowing how people deal with/monitor this.
What about you? You leave it be or you have a catch can?
Thanks

I have a catch can between the crank case and the intake (4 inch piece of plastic tubing, remove and connect 2 hoses /w a canister in between).
Its definitely a cheaper, long life preserving mod for the turbo and intercooler

Yeah, a lot of guys are running catch-cans, its just not something most brag about. lol. When I took the X intercooler off to run the CBRD one, there was a bit of oil spatter on the inlet side of the IC, but that was about it, and that was from about 10-15k miles of driving, so I def would recommend a catch can if you're running ~25k/yr and not swapping out parts regularly

Thanks everyone for your inputs, pictures and link.
I'll probably do that cheap 20-30$ aluminum setup.
But when?...I'm sure dealerships are enough of an *** to have an issue with that...
Thanks again!
