AUX is line-in style.
Ipod output is headphone style.
They are not an ideal fit electrically, but it should work "okay" if you avoid using high volume levels on your iPod.
Really, the AUX input is built to expect signal from an AUX line-out, but an iPod and a headphone->RCA lead is just so convenient that it's hard to resist...

Just make sure you find one that lists compatibility with your generation iPod/iPhone.

They make those too. I've seen them without the video RCA but they don't charge.

And that one shouldnt cause cracking noise??
It may well take care of it. When you have an impedance mismach which is why you need to turn your iPod volume up pretty high to get a good volume out of the stereo. Having the volume all the way up on the iPod is forcing it's little headphone amp/driver to its designed limit and can create distortion and noise. You'll get better sound even if this isn't the source of your cracking.
If you're hesitant to spend money, maybe you can borrow another iPhone/iPod/MP3 player and someone else's cable to see if it resolves your issue. It could be as simple as a bad cable or a loose connection in your headphone jack on your iPod.

^^^This. Running a headphone jack signal to a line-in type port will cause this problem on most audio systems, not just the line-in on your car. You can replicate the problem on any home theater reciever, bookshelf-type stereo, or any other system that requires a line-in. What I do to get around it the cheap way is turn the audio system to mid-power, then turn up the iPod until the sound starts to crackle. Then, I turn the iPod down a bit and limit the volume to that point. I'm too cheap to go buy an adapter cable
