2010 RA Oil filter Issues

After a couple days of research and no definitive answers anywhere on the site I ask you guys:

Does the WIX 57092 oil filter fit our cars?

It is a hell of a lot shorter than the filter jiffy lube puts on there

I would recommend the proper Evo X style Mitsubishi oil filter, code MD356000.

There are a number of other Mitsu sizes that fit on the X/Ralliart, but the above filter is The Right One.

Rich, am I understanding you to say that it's a bad idea to use any other oil filters besides the Mitsubishi factory filter? I've been using aftermarket Fram Tough Guard oil filters for every oil change, and I don't see a problem with doing that.

Hey, if it's a performance filter fit for purpose, it should be totally fine!

I have been known to get rather wound up (ahem) following dealer service screw-ups regarding oil and oil filters, so I may be a wee bit more touchy about this stuff than most, lol.

The one time I got the dealer to change my oil, their final paperwork said they fitted MD356000... but I found a totally different bulbous n/a lancer filter actually fitted. Yes, I was paranoid, and was double-checking their basic oil change workmanship. Sure enough, it was stuffed up.

They also overfilled the oil by 10mm+ on the dipstick, dropped corrosive battery acid on my engine's plastic cover and tore a hold in the rubber seal around my air filter element. It must have been like The Three Stooges in the service area that day - pies flying left and right, people with ladders on their shoulders turning around whacking backs of heads, techies clunking into each other and sending toolboxes flying... well, that's how I picture it.

They responded well when I went troppo, though. Took the car in, redid everything free, and even adjusted my aftermarket intercooler fitment to improve its alignment... ie. they put their own perfectionist on the job to keep this perfectionist happy.

I know, a rather pointless and unrelated anecdote... but pretty funny.

Rich - i am sure we would get along famously!
I am the same way. I do all the work i can (to my level of ability) because it will be done correctly. Even at the Emmsions Inspection site - i watch 'em like a hawk!

Yea that was one of the first places I looked, but it came into conflict with what the computer at autozone was telling me and what the filter I pulled off the car had written on it. The filter had the various equivilant filter numbers from Fram, valvoline, etc...
which for whatever reason did not match the wix one, but I digress....

As long as it doesn't leak (after a week and a half of checking it hasn't) or is wrong for the car in some way I am fine with driving around town with it.

Thanks for the answers guys

That WIX filter, same as the NAPA 7092 filter, are correct filters for the turbo'd 2.0 found in the Ralliart and Evolution and you will have no issues with them, they are great filters.

For next time - if there is a question hold the old one up (or what the book says fits) and the new one. The gaskets should be the same size and the threaded hole the same size. The rest is just capacity (takes longer to be fully fouled and not to be confused with particle filtering size where smaller=better).

FWIW, ever since we started receiving the X's at the Mitsu where I worked for 4 years, we always used MZ690116 oil filter. There was a different number on the original, factory-installed filter (the MD number does sound familiar), but for whatever reason, we could not order under that part number, maybe it's a stateside thing? Can someone else confirm that?

Either way, I have personally seen both Fram and Bosch filter internals completely disintegrate on a performance engine, even when changed at proper intervals, so I tend to stay away from them. Could it have been a fluke or a bad batch issue, sure, but it's not worth the risk to me. Wix, Magnetti Marelli, Parts Master, Purolator, and Prime Guard all seem to seep/leak by the end of the oil change interval, though the different brands do have varying amounts of leakage and it could very well be installer error. Haven't witnesses one of them disintegrate just yet, but usually the performance guys go with the bigger name brands and still end up with issues. Plus, the OEM filter is literally less than $5 ( http://www.mitsubishiparts.net/cart/?pn=mz690116 ), why not just get it and be done? Just my .02
