O2 sensor

I went to the dealership today to see why the check engine light is on. They told me that I need to replace the O2 sensor.. My car is at 8000km right now and under warranty. I'm just wondering if this is covered under warranty. And how do I know what's under the warranty and what's not?

your warranty documentation/owner's manual as well as your country's legal system will dictate what is or isn't covered by warranty.

In ~most~ cases, an O2 sensor on a car with only 8000km should be covered by warranty. If the car has been modified, or more importantly they can prove the power train has been modified in some way then you may be assed out.

Should be less than $100 for the sensor... labor shouldn't be any more than that either. It's not that difficult to replace. Unbolt, unplug the wire. Bolt in the new one, and plug in the wire.

I had my check engine light come on last week so I checked it out, possible 02 sensor. My car is paid off, 91k miles due to highway driving back and forth to work. I've still got 9k left on warranty. Wondering if I should trade it in now before more things start to go wrong? Anyone have any advice on how well these cars keep up?

you should be fine as long as you keep up the sensors and basic maintenance. Sensors aren't expensive. However, a failed sensor that gets ignored can lead to expensive repairs.

It would have cost 600$ to fix that at the dealership, but it was under warranty.

yeah... that's a rip off. For future reference, if you need to replace one out of warranty, any muffler shop would be able to do the same thing for a fraction of the cost.

Angry

Yeah.. I don't really trust the dealership.. They ripped me off last time for a check engine light diagnosis(at another dealership). They told me it was the gas cap not tightened. But in fact, it was the o2 sensor. They charged me 70$ for diagnosis, because that was not a problem that is covered under warranty..

Everyone needs to invest in a 22mm wrench. I've already saved so much labor with this one tool.
Such an easy fix.
