Navigation updates?

Ok did some looking around and asked the dealer (not always the smart thing but did it anyways) I have a few roads on my navigation that just dont ever show up and the roads have been there for at least 5 years. any one know how you can check to see if you have the current version loaded and if no can you update it yourself or do you have to go to the dealer?

I see that behind my navi there is a hdd where i belive you can do updates but im not sure and wanted to ask before i do anything

thanks for any help you can provide

I think 2012 is the latest update.

I thought you had to buy the navigation maps update from the dealer...someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

You might be right. I don't own the /nav system myself, I only helped a friend update his a couple of yrs ago and we had to update an 08 model to 2011 maps. We used a couple of cd's one might have been the maps and the other this.

Update for the maps costs about 300€ here in Europe, it comes on a DVD and if I don't remember wrong it takes a whole 2 (!) hours to complete. Major updates to the maps come every two years, my car (2010 model) came with already old 2008 map data, so it's really time to get an update soon. If only it were cheaper...

You also need a dongle (connects to the 3.5mm jack inside the MMCS unit), which makes it impossible to copy/download the navigation software.
