What exactly is happening?

What exactly is happening when I put my '09 RA from Tarmac to Gravel to Snow. I tried reading around the internet and the car's manual but nothing exactly explains what is going on "behind the scenes." Anybody know? Also, I was reading about the launch control on the Evo X's, do we have anything like that?

Each setting determines how long the ACD will delay in freeing the center differential after a steering input is made. It will determine how much locking force the ACD will exhibit on the clutch pack and center differential.
