Knock Setup on the SAFCII???
Knock Setup on the SAFCII??? EDITED!!! Figured out Knock Setup!!!!
Anyone know how to setup the Knock on the SAFCII? I read the insrtuctions but do I have to set for every RPM incriment or what do I do exactly.

I wish I knew too. I dont have the instructions but, afriend of mine who is a great mechanic and has a turbo car that runs 7.95's told me that if the knock senser goes off......... its way too late.
It's not hard to set, but I don't know how good it is on this SAFC.
Just go to Settings, Knock and get the engine at 1500RPM and set the first reference point. Then put the motor at 3500 and set the second reference point. That's it.
I monitor mine all the time and it goes off a lot. The problem is that I have no reference to what the numbers should be. I want other people to post what type of numbers that they are seeing. Even with stock settings, I see some activity (I say activity because I am not sure it is *actually* knock). Do not watch the peak hold value only. It has a lot of spikes. I set the AFC to monitor it in graph mode and I can see the spikes and see if it goes up on average. I have tuned that way and it is working fairly well. It is a little different than the knock activity on a DSM. I used to run a little knock(very little) on my DSM and it ran best that way.
After you get it set, please post what type of numbers you are seeing.

You can call Apexi USA and they can give you more information about it. A freind of mine called and I believe they said that anything below "50" was okay. If it got to 50 that was when it starts to retard timing alot. I am not 100% positive on this though.

I have seen spikes over 200, but I doubt thay really mean much. My average graph readout will be in form 10-40. It does have smaller spikes with stock settings, but it still spikes to 100 or so. I usually run at 1.35bar and about -5 to -6 on the AFC. That is a very conservative setting compared t a lot of other people. I still need to get to the dyno and put a wideband on it though. Once I do, then I will have a better idea of what is a bad number or not.
On a DSM, we used to read out knock count on the datalogger from 0-39. A lot of people actually tuned for a 5-7 knock count. It wouldn't start pulling timing until above that number and the car ran great that way. We need to gain that level of information for the Evo so that everyone has a reference to work from. I wish I had a datalogger that allowed me to monitor timing. That's the best way to tune without a wideband IMHO.
For more detailed instructions on setting it up, go to:

Then read page 39.
Be sure to post your results. Averages and peak numbers. We need a database.

OK, he is how the knock sensor ad setup wrks, it is so simple yet so smart it is crazy.
Basicaly, those people who see MASSIVE Knock counts set theirs up wrong and here is why.
Your engine makes noize (DUH) and the knock sensor pics up every bit of this. SO when you put your car in neutral, and rev it to say 200 RPMS you may pick up over 100 counts of knock (I DID) but that is not knock, it is just the engine noise, so you set it there. The really is no way you get knock under no load unless your engine is REALLY fuctup. THE TRICK IS TO HAVE THE ENGINE FULLY WARMED UP, REALLY. Do this again for 3500-4000, the noisier the better.
YOUR SAFCII should pick up nothing now until real knock, the noise made over the engine, is picked up. I managed to get 140 counts at 1500 and 183 at 3555 to get cancelled out, get it, now the SAFCII will read 0 unless it gets a reading higher then that.
That simple.

Hm, I waited till my engine was fully warmed up and set it up.
I got 223 counts for both 1500 and 3500 rpms. Seems awfully high... but now I never get any knock counts when driving normally.

THATS GOOD, 4G63's are very noisey engines. The more noize you have, the more accurate reading for knock you have.
Chances are you have a noiser lifter, which is 100% normal.

Crap. I have a problem regarding knock counts. I posted on the other thread to hopefully get more responses - can you guys read this?
umiami, can you check my post out? thanks.

There are a lot of spikes. I don't consider that real knock. I will average 30-40, but get some spikes in the 170-200 range. I am not too worried about that. It won't hit that high number, but once in the 4500-5000 range for a split second.

This thread is old, but I was wondering if anyone has tried a product like Knock link or not? I heard you bolt it neat the oem knock sensor, down past the intake manni, down on the block. You can at least see when you may be getting some knock. I dont know how reliable the blinky light **** is.......Anywho, im also trying to research other products that may be able to register knock count from obdii if possible.. I know on the pocket logger it can only read knock from obdI (1g dsm).
